課堂經歷

Every year the Amazon River spills its banks and the animals transform their habits to adjust. Fish spread out, pink river dolphins (yes, pink!) give birth and sloths swim from tree to tree. The land is transformed into a watery cathedral forest, where it's an advantage to go from land to water or from water to MUCH more water with ease. You will learn about the characteristics and behaviors of some familiar, and not-so-familiar animals, from a wildlife biologist who has firsthand experience studying, living with, and visiting tropical rainforests, including the Amazon during the floods. There will be time for questions throughout the class, giving students a unique opportunity to find out about tropical rainforest animals that live in the Amazon and what it's like to be a field biologist.

Using visuals, we will talk about:

The Amazon River and the Amazon Basin
Where all the rain comes from in the Amazon
How the Amazon is transformed when it floods

Pink river dolphins
Red-breasted Piranha
Green anacondas
Sloths
Arapaima fish
Capybara
Black Caiman (a type of crocodile)

There are no homework assignments, tests or prior knowledge needed for this class, but it's my hope that the information and personal insights will become memories....the best way to learn! With this casual format, I want learners to feel comfortable asking questions.

學習目標

Students will expand their knowledge of:

- Types of tropical rainforest animals
- Unique and unusual animal adaptations
- What it's like to explore the Amazon

Hello everyone. I'm sincerely looking forward to meeting you and expanding your horizons into the wonderful world of nature, with my solar-powered classes (yes, all my electricity is solar)!

I started out as a wildlife biologist (Bachelor's degree) then evolved into a conservation educator (Master's degree), author, and artist. I have worked in the rain forests of Panama, the swamps of Florida and the mountains of Idaho. I have numerous published articles on environmental issues and also conceived the award-winning book, “Art of the National Parks”. I have taught science (and art) indoors and outdoors, as well as written curriculum for all ages for organizations such as World Wildlife Fund and the Smithsonian National Zoo. I lead organized group nature trips to Panama, Africa, Spain, California and New Mexico and love teaching people about exotic animals, plants, and places.

When I worked in the environmental education departments of different organizations, we created innovative ways for students to learn concepts through fun experiences, such as games, teamwork, creative thinking, and the magic of inspiration. This is what I bring to the online classroom. Of course, it's also fun to share my personal hands-on experiences in the wild places I have lived and visited. That personal touch is engaging to students and can ignite a lifelong interest in the outdoors.

I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, my adopted state and truly the "Land of Enchantment". Here, I like to spend time hiking, mountain biking, painting, watching birds and watching the light change on the mountain.
