In this 6-week course, students will be introduced to the (7) figurative language. This course offers a brief explanation of each device along with some examples and practice activities. Here is an overview of some of the activities we will be participating in throughout the course. Each week will include some of the same things. Students will work on their own mini book where they can copy the information they've learned that week about each device and use as a review tool. A brief video that introduces the devices along with some examples will be posted at the beginning of the week as an introduction. We will read a book that has a variety of examples as well and complete a sentence sort, choosing which sentences are examples of that weeks literary device and what makes them examples. Homework assignments will also be assigned and reviewed each week. Students will be asked to post their homework assignments to the classroom and comment on their peers posts. Week #1: simile & metaphor - (book: ). - I will share videos that include examples of metaphors and similes in fun ways such as in famous pop songs. The students will write the examples they here in the comments of the videos. - Homework - students will be asked to complete a simile self-portrait worksheet (attached). Week #2: idioms - (book: "Even More Parts" by Tedd Arnold) - We will complete idiom task cards where the students will be asked to select an idioms meaning. - Homework - students will be asked to complete an idiom drawing assignment where they will create or choose an idiom, draw what the idiom makes them visualize, and then write and draw the literal meaning (attached). Week #3: alliteration - (book: "Superhero ABC" by Bob McLead). - We will complete a letter activity. I will select a couple of letters from the alphabet and we will "fill" the letters with description words beginning with that letter that could be used to create an alliteration. Students will post a copy of their filled in letter to the classroom and see if they can add anymore words to their peers submissions. I will include these letters for your students to print out and use. - Homework - students will be asked to complete an alliteration "phone" activity where they will be asked to create a "text" that is an alliteration (attached). Week #4: personification - (book: "The Crayon Box that Talked" By Shane DeRolf). - I will ask the students to choose any object in their room and create a personification for it - meaning, they will be asked to "make" the object do something dramatic and of human nature (for example: the bottle was sweating, the light danced...). Students will post a video of their object "coming to life" or a story about what their object is doing. - Homework - students will be asked to complete the "write a personification" worksheet where they create a personification and draw a corresponding photo, among other questions (attached). Week #5: hyperbole - (book: "There was an Old Lady who swallowed a Fly" By Staurt Lynch). - I will ask students to think of their own hyperbole, or one that we already discussed, and act out the hyperbole in a very short, dramatic skit (for example: I was so tired, I slept forever! The students can act like they are sleeping for a long time) and post their skit to the classroom. - Homework - students will be asked to complete a "this story is insane!" worksheet that follows the same outline as a Mad-Lib (attached). Week #6: onamonapia - (book: "Charlie's Superhero Underpants" By Paul Bright). - Students will be asked to turn a sentence into an onamonapia: a graphic like how they appear in stories (for example: "the bee buzzed". Students will then create an "image" using the word 'buzzed' as it would appear in a story as an onamonapia). They will then post their picture to the classroom. At the conclusion of this week, students can post a picture of their completed graphic organizer from week 1. - Homework - None Standards: CC.1.3.4.F - determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in grade level text, including figurative language. 1.3.5.C.2 - figurative language. - Throughout this class, students will engage with their peers through the use of Kahoots! and class wide games like Jeopardy! and BINGO. Nearpod will also be utilized to demonstrate what students have learned, engage in virtual field trips, and allow for classmate interaction. - Students will also post their completed crafts and assignments for their classmates to comment on. Students will follow along with various crafts such as coloring pages, multimedia crafts, informative diagrams, cut and paste crafts, and so much more! We will engage in activities such as interactive google presentations, mini info books, and super exciting experiments! - Also shared in the classroom will be exciting videos for students to watch and learn from, guided questions will be attached to each video. - Anchor charts will be used as visuals.
