In this week-long writing camp (five days), students will become familiar with the realistic flash fiction format and be guided through the steps to create their own flash fiction piece. Flash fiction is a type of fiction that is characterized by its low word count - only a few hundred words. In this short form of fiction writing, students can learn a great deal about character development, setting, tone, conflict, and plot without the overwhelm of writing several thousand words. The following gives a broad overview of the writing camp's schedule: Day 1: Introductions and what to expect from this class (discussion of the syllabus). What is flash fiction? What is realistic fiction? Read an example of realistic flash fiction and discuss its tone, setting, and characters. Using prompts, students will take notes during thought-provoking questions and discussions about choosing a tone and setting. Homework: decide the tone of a story you want, and its setting. Day 2: Students will share what they wrote about tone and setting. Discussion of what makes a compelling character. We will talk about traits, behaviors, history, etc., and how to create a character profile. Homework: create your character's profile. Day 3: Students will share their character profiles with the class. Discussion of what makes good conflict (with examples), and how to choose the perfect conflict for their characters based on their profiles. Students will read several good examples of showing character conflict in the first paragraph of a story. Homework: students will choose a compelling conflict Day 4: Students will share their first paragraph showing their character's conflict. Discussion of a "slap in the face" moment for the character as a result of the character's choices. Always ask: would my character do this based on their profile? In-class writing time: write a second paragraph with a "slap in the face" moment. Discussion of possible endings, and what they mean for the character. Homework: Finish up the "slap in the face" paragraph as necessary, and write the ending paragraph of the story. Day 5: Students will share their slap in the face moment and story ending. In-class writing and editing time with support and help from the teacher to complete stories. Share final drafts with the class and thoughts on possibly expanding the story. See you soon! Love, Teacher Bethanie
