Students will learn how to outline and write a 5-paragraph compare and contrast expository essay on any two (or more!) topics or themes using a super easy writing formula. We will discuss how to narrow down a specific point of comparison/contrast suitable for this style of essay, how to outline the essay, and finally, how to quickly write a grade-A essay by simply expanding upon the outline. We will then practice using this writing formula as a class!

The 5-paragraph expository essay is the most common type of essay assigned for both standardized and class subject matter tests, and students are expected to write an informative, well-organized essay within the time allotted for the test. Compare and contrast essays are a form of expository essay frequently expected of test takers as well as students of any field, but particularly the humanities. For example, a literary analysis of multiple works may be written as a compare and contrast essay. The formulaic approach to expository writing that I teach is a valuable skill that students will be able to apply for the rest of their educational careers, throughout high school and college (and beyond!). 

While we will not have time in class for students to write an essay, learners who would like to follow along and outline an essay as we go will leave class with a full outline, and they will know how to turn their outlines into finished 5-paragraph essays! Learners will get the most out of this 1-hour class if they come prepared with two topics, themes, or ideas to compare/contrast, but those who are simply exploring compare and contrast writing are also more than welcome!
