This class is perfect for both athletes and sports fans. Topics we will discuss include: How do we define unethical behavior in sports (gamesmanship) and ethical behavior (sportsmanship)? Students will think of examples from their own experiences as athletes and/or sports fans, and we will debate some specific examples from professional sports, including flopping in soccer. Is it ethical to be an NFL fan, given what we now know about the long-term effects of repeated head injury? Should there be rules against taunting in basketball, end zone celebrations in football, and bat flipping in baseball? Why or why not, and what should those rules be? Are there kinds of trash talking that are unethical? Should Russian skater Kamila Valieva, who tested positive for a banned substance, have been allowed to skate in the Olympics? Should baseball players who used steroids be admitted to the hall of fame? Do famous athletes have any ethical responsibilities to serve as role models for their fans? Do they have any responsibility to give back to the community? Should they use the platform they have to speak out on social issues, or not? This is a discussion-based class, so come join the conversation and share your views!
