In this one-time class students will be shown multiple strategies for adding and subtracting unlike denominator fractions. Students will be shown how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators using number lines and standard algorithm. Class will be taught using an I Do, We Do, You Do method where the teacher will demonstrate the strategy, then students will walk the teacher through the strategy and last they will complete the strategy on their own. The first part of class we will discuss the definition of a fraction, denominator, numerator, factors and multiples. In the next part of class the teacher will begin by showing the number line strategy for adding and subtracting unlike denominator fractions. After watching the teacher students will assist the teacher in solving another problem and then complete some practice problems on their own. After students have been given time to complete problems we will move into standard algorithm. Teacher will demonstrate standard algorithm. Teacher will begin by demonstrating standard algorithm, then students will walk the teacher through a problem and finally they will complete practice problems on their own. Students will need to have an understanding of adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators and putting fractions in lowest terms. Teacher will post an optional extended practice worksheet in the classroom for more practice. Students will guide the speed and progression of the class by their understanding of each concept.
