課堂經歷
Many artistic learners between the ages of 11-15 have a desire to replicate the human face. In this class, we will be working to develop and strengthen our drawing and observation skills around portraits. We will accomplish this through a deep inside look into typical facial proportions at various angles, anatomy and how this affects line work and lighting, honing in on using a pencil as a tool for measuring and angles, and developing analytical and observational drawing skills. We will use only graphite pencils and sketchbook paper in this class as to focus all attention on creating a realistic portrait drawing. However, students are welcome to include any other 2D material at their own discretion. Through each drawing we work on, I will pause class periodically to provide positive and constuctive feedback in a nature that suits the needs of each student and allows for differentiated instruction. Students are not required to have any prior experience with drawing portraits. Because I teach in an individualized manner, this course can work to be foundational or can work to nurture an already established skillset. My online classroom is a welcoming and encouraging environment where we focus on strengthening our skills through a growth mindset approach, rather than one that approaches perfection. I work to motivate students to be patient with themselves and provide opportunities for breaks whenever a student may need one. My hope is that, while teaching drawing skills to your young learners, I may also teach them to be kind to themselves, persistant, and to not tie their artistic development to their self worth. This course is $17 for an hour. Week 1: Forward facing proportion drawing. In this class, I will cover the proportions of a person facing forward and pencil techniques. This information will be applied to a line drawing of a person. Images will be provided. Week 2: Drawing a skull! In this course we will work on drawing a skull to become familiar with the anatomy and how this informs the shapes of our faces and the shadows that are typically created from our bone structure. Week 3: continue and finish skull drawing Week 4: Eye study with shading. Week 5: Nose study with shading. Week 6: Mouth study with shading. Week 7: Ear study with shading. Week 8: Forward Facing Portrait project from an image of your choice! This can be a self portrait, or a portrait of a friend or family member. Week 9: Continue portrait project. Week 10: Finish forward facing portrait. Week 11: Side profile proportions. Begin a side profile portrait with an image of your choice! This can be a self portrait, or a portrait of a friend or family member. Week 12: Continue portrait. Week 13: Finish portrait. Begin a drawing of a face at an unusual angle. Week 14: Work on drawing. Finish Drawing.

Dear Families,
I have loved and cherished art for my entire life and my hope is that I may be able to ignite or strengthen this love for art within my students. I want to extend to you and your child my warmest welcome into my virtual classroom.
My philosophy for learning in the art room revolves around differentiating instruction for each student’s individual needs. Coming together into the classroom, we each bring with us our goals, desires, our histories, our struggles, and our joys. Art allows us to express these aspects about ourselves and I believe it is important to do so. Through each of our projects, I will work with every individual learner to adjust the parameters to their interests and skill set while challenging them to always push forward.
Through my virtual classroom, I will be teaching art classes in painting, drawing, and even some sculpture for all ages and for all creative minds! We will work with a wide variety of materials, techniques, and analytical thought processes in each of my classes.
Through my undergraduate career, I received a BFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Sculpture and a BSE in K-12 Art Education, both in the spring of 2023. Beginning in the Fall of 2023, I will be pursuing a Master's in Fine Art in the highly ranked MFA program at Arizona State University. I have been teaching on Outschool since May of 2020 and have assisted artists in residence and students at the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in Vermont during their summer 2022 stone carving workshops. I have created and sold a wide variety of artwork professionally, such as drawings, paintings, and sculptures, and have exhibited in a variety of art galleries. I am highly passionate about art and I strongly believe that when doing artwork, you are building a relationship with your materials and the creation itself. Throughout my time doing and practicing artwork, I have learned that art is a powerful force that can be meditative and help connect you with yourself and the values you carry.
With all this being said, I am happy to receive any comments, questions, or concerns through Outschool messaging. I look forward to working with your child and supporting them in every step of the process through their artistic endeavors!
Sincerely,
Amelia LaChance
