This class is video format and will not have any live classes. Teacher will provide weekly feedback for assigned work. Document based questions (DBQs) are fundamental to social studies as well as history classes. This class is not about the content of DBQs but instead deals with the format and rubric of writing DBQs. The course is broken down into 4 weeks and spends each of the four weeks on a different portion of the rubric. During these weeks, I will post videos every Sunday by 4PM EST explaining the best way to get full points on the rubric based on the topic for that week. On Sundays by 8pm EST I will post exercises for learners to complete by Wednesday of that week by 8PM EST. I will offer feedback each Saturday by 8PM EST. Week 1 : Thesis/Claim During this week we will work on writing a solid thesis statement responding to prompts that establishes a line of reasoning. This week will also examine descriptive verbs and what the graders are looking for when they ask certain questions. For example, if the prompt begins with "Examine the extent to which...." what does this really mean? Week 2: Contextualization This week is all about setting the scene ... so imagine if you are at a theater watching a play, what do you need to know before the play begins? Week 3: Evidence This is the heart of the DBQ and requires focus on using documents to not only address the topic of the prompt but also supporting your argument using those documents. Week 4: Analysis and Reasoning This week examines using HIPP to show the historical situation, intended audience, purpose or point of view. In addition this week will show to get the all important "complexity" point.
