Do you love Animals? Do you love Disney? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a part of the team that creates magical worlds like the Imagineers or be a zookeeper? As a former zookeeper and Cast Member in Disney’s Animal Programs, I love sharing my passion for animals and the environment! Join me as we go on an African Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We will learn about the history, Imagineering (STEAM), careers, and amazing animals that make up the magic! We will talk about the animal's habitat, adaptations, diet, and ways they are cared for. We will learn about what it's like to be a zookeeper, how cast members with various careers come together to create an immersive experience designed to promote conservation and magical memories, and then talk about conservation and the environment. The 5 week course is outlined as follows: Week One- Intro (history and Imagineering of the Safari), Bongos, Okapi, Rhino, Greater Kudu (main content video: 49 minutes) Week Two- Hippo, Crocodile, Ankole Cattle, Hyena, Spring Bock, Eland, Giraffes, Zebra, Wildebeest, Sable Antelope (main content video: 45 minutes) Week Three- Elephant, Flamingo, Lion, Cheetah, Warthog, Water buck, Bontebok, Nigerian Dwarf Goat (main content video: 54 minutes) Week Four- Working together to create the magic- zookeepers, vets, Imagineers, horticulture, guides/attractions, wild Africa trek, nutrition, educators (main content video: 58 minutes) Week Five- conservation- Disney conservation at the park and beyond, in your own backyard (main content video: 36 minutes) This class is a FLEX class and therefore has NO live meetings but will still be highly interactive. This format is perfect for learners from all over the world who want to learn at their own pace and dive deeper into a topic than a one hour a week live course allows. Each week learners will have access to videos introducing the content for the week. These videos will be in different formats (teaching outside in various locations including Disney World, personal video footage of animals, and optional supplementary video links) in order to make it more engaging for learners and improve retention. Learners will be given multiple engagement activities (I.e. discussion questions, projects, crafts, Kahoot, and peardeck) to which they can complete one or all throughout the week depending on their level of interest and engagement. Learners will then post pictures, video, and/or discussion posts to show-off their weekly activities (many of which are STEAM driven-Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). This will both be fun for the learners as they get to interact with their peers and improve learning potential and class engagement. I will be interacting with students via weekly Outschool classroom discussions (I.e. asking and answering questions, encouraging discussion and reacting when learners post about their projects/activities). I use various teaching methods and my upbeat personality to encourage participation and course engagement. Because I feature some animals in multiple courses (i.e. lion, elephant, flamingo), I do offer a DISCOUNT for learners who have completed my Animals Around the World FLEX course. Learners will learn about a variety of African Animals (habitat, diet, adaptations, how they are cared for, etc.). They will also have fun learning some history of how the ride was made, many of the jobs including what it is like to be a zookeeper, and conservation.

We will talk about conservation topics but will not talk in depth about "extinction or dire situations" but rather focus on things that students can do at home. We will also talk about animals that eat other animals or dead things. There is several different activities that will be provide for the learners to choose from. Some of which include going outside into their backyard or neighborhood (all of these activities are ones that require parental guidance with your discretion). We will also discuss the Imagineering behind the magic of the Disney Safari; while I will always try to preserve the magic, some of the behind the scenes information may make the ride a bit less realistic.

I will be providing original content videos for the class, however I will also suggest Youtube videos each week that will show certain animal adaptations, behaviors, sounds, etc. in more detail. These are optional videos and I have them play through viewpure.com (no ads, discussions, recommended videos) in hopes that there will be less chance of inappropriate content. I have a Bachelors in Biology, zookeeper experience, and I have worked in the Animal Programs at Disney so the information I am sharing is based on years of experience in school and on the job.

I have a Bachelors of Science in Biology where I studied zoology, ecology, and animal behavior, among other things. I have worked as a zoo keeper with animals including elephants, lions, giraffes, flamingos, siamangs, lemurs, tortoises, snakes, monkeys, orangutans, amur leopards, and red pandas. I have been a zoo camp instructor as well as an animal, science, and environment educator in the Animal Program at Walt Disney World. I also currently visit Disney World at least once a week.
