What is archaeology? And what do archaeologists do? In this class students will get a brief introduction to science of archaeology. Archaeology has been referred to as the “hand-maiden to history”. Others have asserted that archaeology is “anthropology or it is nothing”. Archaeology is, however, a discipline unto itself. Students will learn about the tools that archaeologists use to find and uncover sites. Students will also learn about the types of data that archaeologists uncover learn about the multi-disciplinary nature of archaeological science.
I am a professional archaeologist for over 20 years that has worked at sites throughout the United States and the world. I am currently the tribal archaeologist for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. I also teach archaeology/anthropology classes at Sitting Bull College and am a historic interpretive guide at On-A-Slant Mandan Indian Village at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in Mandan, North Dakota. I have been engaged in teaching youth about the science of archaeology since AD 2000.
