Welcome!! This is a 10 week Multi-Day summer course that will cover the key concepts in the 3rd grade math curriculum according to the common core state standards. This class is perfect for students who are either going into 3rd grade and want the advantage of being taught the key concepts before beginning the class, for students who want to keep their 3rd grade skills sharp, or for students who need a bit of remediation before entering 4th grade. During this 10 week course we will learn concepts in an interactive format. Students will be able to build understanding. At the end of each class students will be given a worksheet to cover material from the class (and previous classes). We will go over all correct answers at the beginning of the next class and students will have time to ask questions and discuss solutions and their processes of answering the questions. This is a comprehensive class designed to help students improve their reading skills, understand key literary elements, and prepare for standardized testing in school. This is a full Reading and Language Arts curriculum course taught by a certified teacher and Reading Specialist using the Science of Teaching Reading principles. This class is a great fit because students read a different story in each session. For every story, students engage in discussions and answer questions on: • Reading comprehension • Vocabulary • Theme • Main idea and details • Figurative language (including similes, metaphors, personification, and hyperbole) • Poetic elements • Inference • And mor This class is different from others because it follows a curriculum and is academically focused while being engaging and motivating for all learners. The curriculum is cross-curricular so science and social studies topics will be also be covered. Small class sizes ensure that your child gets the one on one instruction your child needs, child will learn to read guaranteed! Get your child ready for school! This course can cover all 3rd Grade reading, depending on your child's level. This class meets all Common Core Curriculum standards. The Themes covered are as follows: Unit 1: Introduction Unit 2: Civics, Government, Citizenship Unit 3: Elements of a Story Unit 4: Energy in All its Forms Unit 5: The Arts Unit 6: Review and Wrap up Each Week lessons will include: Reading Comprehension Phonics/Grammar Vocabulary Comprehension Questions Writing and Review Be ready soar in the grade reading, grammar, vocabulary language arts class! During each class I will present a topic needed to be a great reader. We will then read short passages and practice using that technique. A variety of sources will be used to practice reading comprehension - informational texts, workplace and community-based documents, general fiction, opinion based texts, and non-fiction aligned with science and social studies curriculums for this age group. Students will be assessed on their comprehension of the reading passages by answering questions about the main idea, making inferences, the author’s purpose, summary, mood, characterization, character’s point of view, sequence of events, theme, and supporting details. A solid understand of these concepts will also greatly improve one's writing. What we cover on a specific day will be learner led and depend on the specific class. The topics listed below will all be presented. Finding the Main Idea Locating and Understanding Supporting Details Making Inferences Sequence of Events Comparing and Contrasting Cause and Effect Drawing Conclusions Determining Author's Evidence and Purpose Setting Character Traits Application (apply recently learned information to a new situation) Synthesis Finding the Theme Analyzing Story Structure (Inciting Incident, Conflict, Climax, Resolution) I will always carefully explain WHY each answer is correct, so learners are able to better understand how to apply each of these reading strategies. **MAKE UP SESSIONS AVAILABLE IF NOT ABLE TO ATTEND SOME CLASSES!! (Message for details) I am a certified teacher who has taught math for over 20 years in fun and interactive ways with much success. Though my approach can be characterized as energetic and engaging, the structure and detail of the class guarantees students will be presented knowledge in a way that cultivates mastery. Student learning is my passion, and I truly believe math can be mastered in a fun environment. I expect each student to come to class with a pencil and notebook, ready to take notes and ready to participate. I also expect students to give a good attempt on the worksheets that are given out each class, so I can check for understanding. During most classes we won’t use a calculator, however, if your learner requires accommodations where one is helpful, please message me, and they can use one during the lessons. I hope to see your learner in class soon!! Teacher Rosalind Derricotte
