If you're obsessed with true crime shows and podcasts, this course is your chance to step into the shoes of a forensic scientist! Over 10 weeks, you'll learn how real investigators use science to solve crimes, from collecting evidence at crime scenes to analyzing DNA and matching bullets to firearms. Using clips from popular true crime documentaries and podcasts, we’ll explore the fascinating world of forensic science through real-life mysteries. Each week, you’ll tackle a new forensic technique, like fingerprint analysis or blood spatter interpretation, with relevant case studies from iconic shows like Forensic Files and Criminal podcast episodes. You’ll work individually and in groups on fun activities that mimic real crime scene investigations, all while discussing how forensic experts crack the case. By the end of the course, you’ll apply everything you’ve learned to solve your own fictional case for a final project! What You’ll Learn: Crime scene investigation and evidence collection Analyzing fingerprints, DNA, and bloodstains Forensic anthropology, toxicology, and entomology How forensic scientists present evidence in court No prior experience in forensic science is required, but a background in Biology will be helpful. This is a rigorous scientific investigation course, made fun and relatable through clips from true crime media. Whether you dream of being a detective or just love solving mysteries, this course will show you the science behind the headlines.
學習目標
Develop an understanding of core forensic science techniques such as fingerprint analysis, DNA profiling, blood spatter interpretation, and evidence collection, and apply these methods to solve fictional cases.
Analyze real-life forensic case studies from true crime documentaries and podcasts to explore the role of forensic science in criminal investigations and the legal process.

超過 10 週課 1:
Introduction to Forensic Science & Crime Scene Investigation
In our first week, we’ll explore the basics of forensic science, its role in the criminal justice system, and the importance of crime scene investigation. Students will learn how investigators secure a crime scene, document evidence, and preserve the chain of custody. We’ll dive into a famous true crime case to see how these steps are applied in real life.
Key Concepts:
History of forensic science
Crime scene protocols
Chain of custody
Case Study: The Disappearance of Helle Crafts

課 2:
Evidence Collection and Preservation
This week, students will learn about the various types of physical evidence—like fibers, hair, and trace materials—and how forensic experts collect and preserve them. We’ll cover techniques for gathering evidence without contamination and examine a cold case where new forensic methods were used to solve the mystery.
Key Concepts:
Types of evidence (physical, biological, trace)
Proper collection and preservation methods
Case Study: Little Girl Lost

課 3:
Fingerprint Analysis
We’ll get hands-on this week with fingerprint analysis, studying the unique patterns that make everyone’s prints one of a kind. Students will practice identifying loops, whorls, and arches, and we’ll look at a true crime case where fingerprint evidence was the key to solving the crime.
Key Concepts:
Fingerprint patterns (loops, whorls, arches)
Fingerprint collection techniques
Case Study: If You Have a Hammer

課 4:
Blood Spatter and Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
Students will learn how blood behaves in different situations and how forensic scientists can use bloodstain patterns to reconstruct crime scenes. We’ll explore real cases where blood spatter analysis played a crucial role and get into the science of fluid dynamics.
Key Concepts:
Types of bloodstains (passive, projected, transfer)
Analyzing blood spatter patterns
Case Study: The Staircase
