Look through my classes at https://outschool.com/teachers/Kayla-Brown and enter the coupon code at checkout. * In this ongoing (subscription-based) class, we will meet each week and discuss 4-6 mythical creatures and beings (like gods, goddesses, kami, etc.)! Each week before class, I will post a list of the 4-6 chosen creatures & beings so that students have time to research them if they would like. We will alternate between Themed Week (like Greek or Japanese Mythology), Holiday Week (focused on a holiday that happens around that week), Random & Requested Week (where there is no connection between topics but have been requested by students), and Activity Week (such as Bingo or Jeopardy). In Themed, Holiday, and Random & Requested Weeks, there is usually an activity at the end of class involving one of the creatures or beings we talked about where students are encouraged to discuss their opinions! In most classes, we will be talking about and seeing images of a "creepy creature/being" (scarier than the others) at the end - I will have warnings. Hence, if students do not want to be scared, they are welcome to leave class early and they will not miss anything other than that one creature! Themed and Holiday Weeks: 1. ~10 minutes - a discussion about the theme or holiday of the week 2. ~5 minutes - a lesson about the first creature or being 3. ~3 minutes - video(s) or song(s) about that creature or being 4. Repeat the lesson and videos 3-4 more times with other creatures or beings 5. ~5 minutes - optional presentations of activity Random & Requested Week: 1. ~10 minutes - a lesson about the first creature or being 2. ~5 minutes - video(s) or song(s) about that creature or being 3. Repeat the lesson and videos 4-5 more times with other creatures or beings 4. ~5 minutes - optional presentations of activity Activity Week: 1. ~5 minutes - Explaining the activity and how to participate 2. ~30-50 minutes - playing the game or activity (e.g. Jeopardy, Mad Libs, Spin the Wheel) 3. (Optional - depends on class) ~last 20 minutes - Random & Requested creatures or beings from students ------Weekly Plans (may change depending on classes and teacher discretion)-------- November 4-7: Halloween in Asia, & Australia and Día de Los Muertos November 11-14: Random & Requested November 18-21: Fictional Disney Mythology November 25-28: Native American Mythology - Wampanoag & Pequot To see the creatures & beings we have completed so far, please go to this Google Sheet: https://bit.ly/37OjMYs Students may want a basic knowledge of mythology and mythological creatures & beings, but it is not required, as I will be going over the information in class. The information that students know about before class will allow them to have a deeper understanding of the material and be able to share what they know during the class. I am always interested to hear what students think and how they feel about what they have learned, but it also makes the class more interesting and exciting for everyone! My teaching style involves information being presented to students, where they can ask questions and discuss what they have learned but I also include and utilize interactive activities to gauge learning as we go. I will present information through a PowerPoint during class, including videos, photos, and information about or featuring the creatures & beings, their animal counterparts (if they exist), their mythological background, what they may be similar to, and how they are seen within society. Students are encouraged to participate in discussions about what we talk about and how they are seen in society but they are welcome to participate as much or as little as they want. A recording of the class is posted after each session, so learners can go back and rewatch classes or watch a class they missed. I also utilize captions in my class as much as possible, so that students can read what is being said if they have a hard time hearing, miss something, or their computer sound is messing up. If there is anything I can do regarding adjustment or accessibility to improve your students' experience in class (e.g. no flashing lights, etc.), please do not hesitate to let me know!
學習目標
Students will learn about different mythical creatures & beings, their mythology, their real-life counterparts are (if they have any), and the different media they are seen in. They will work on their discussion skills and make connections to history and existing animals.
其他詳情
父母的引導和規範
Mythical creatures & beings can have more intense backgrounds and mythology, so aspects such as destruction, violence, drowning, kidnapping, and murder may arise as to explain these myths and their methods but I will not dwell on them in the class and will try to keep students from focusing on those aspects. If your student is more sensitive to these topics or gets scared easily, you may want to stay in the same room with them or check on them throughout the class.
We may also watch short scenes of each creature from media (such as movies, video games, and tv shows) that may have a PG or PG-13 rating, but I will not show any explicit scenes (no sexuality, gory violence, or profanity) - they will only be used to show the creatures & beings and their methods to enhance a student's art.
In most classes, we will be talking about and seeing images of a "creepy creature/being" (scarier than the others) at the end - I will have warnings so if students do not want to be scared, they are welcome to leave class early and they will not miss anything other than that one creature!
供應清單
A handout will be available in the classroom upon enrollment. Students can print it out or take notes on their own. Students will need pencils and if they want to add color to their activity, they can bring art materials, such as crayons, colored pencils, or markers with them.

學士學位 在 歷史 從 George Mason University
I am a historian, scientist, and member of the LGBTQIA+/queer community (asexual, panromantic; she/her/hers). I teach mythology, science, and pop culture classes here on Outschool.
I graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Forensic Science and a focus on mythology and research. But I have been a teacher for over 8 years, working with students from toddlerhood to teenage and beyond. I have always encouraged students to learn based on their own learning styles, so my classes incorporate different varieties of learning, including interactive elements.
Mythology has always been something I have researched and been fascinated by. I took classes during my Bachelor's program that focused on Greek, Asian, and Irish mythology, but they also expanded into other areas, which I now focus on in my Outschool classes.
