In this 6 week course, learners are introduced to one of the oldest type of ecosystem: Rainforests. Learners learn why rainforests are important to our planet. They will learn about the four (4) layers that make up a rainforest: emergent layer, canopy, understory, and forest floor. They will also learn about some of the animals and plants that call the rainforest home. Each week, learners will add parts to their rainforest diorama after an interactive class discussion. This class allows learners to learn about what a rainforest is, and how it is a valuable ecosystem. This class allows learners to harness their skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM), and Mindfulness, making it a well rounded class for your learner(s).
I am an experienced conservation educator. I have a certification on being a compassionate educator from Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoot Program, and Project WILD certified as well.
Learners will provide their own crafting materials to make their diorama during this course. For the first class, a shoebox (or any good sized box), brown construction paper (or any brown paper), and glue will be necessary. For the following weeks, materials may include, but are not limited to:
1. crafting materials, like construction paper, pipe cleaners, felt, pom poms - any crafting materials already available in your home
will work. Be creative!
2. natural materials, like twigs, leaves, pine cones, rocks,
3. LEGOs
4. animal and nature toys
5. glue
6. scissors
