What can students do when they must read an unfamiliar text with new vocabulary? How can students find a way "in" to a text that seems boring or technical at first, or that was written in a different time period? I have been teaching English, Social Science, and Special Education in a large public school district for 15 years. The three reading skills I teach here are part of a larger set of reading strategies that reading specialists consider essential for cross-curricular literacy. I recommend the following resource to parents who are interested in learning more: Teaching Reading in the Content Areas: If Not Me, Then Who? 3rd edition. by Vicki Urquhart and Dana Frazee.
It's a good idea for students to have pen or pencil and paper handy to write down any words they don't understand as we read the story together.
Content warning: The story we will read in class is "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin. In this story, the protagonist learns that her husband has suddenly died. Please also note that the message of the story is critical of marriage as it existed in 19th-century America.
