課堂經歷

*Parts 1, 2, and 3 of this class series can be taken in any order.

In this eight-week course, we will practice using tips and tricks to develop reading comprehension skills further.  We will focus on what to do before you read (access prior knowledge), while you are reading (active reading), and after you read (making connections). Each week, we will read a classic short story or poem and apply reading strategies (questioning, analyzing text structure, visualization, summaries) together.  

Week 1-  "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou
Week 2-  “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury
Week 3-  “Stop the Sun” by Gary Paulsen
Week 4-  “The Jacket” by Gary Soto
Week 5-  “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe
Week 6-  “The Hitchhiker” by Lucille Fletcher
Week 7-  “To Build a Fire” by Jack London
Week 8-  “Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan
*  Please note that I may elect to change a title based on learner needs and level of understanding.  
Each class will have a warm-up activity, a presentation of practical skills, and a reading application.  

I promote fun, happy learning environments where kids are free to talk and laugh with each other and with me.  I believe that the best learning happens when learners are happy, engaged, and comfortable.  

No experience necessary, but it may be helpful to enroll in my four-week Reading Comprehension course first.

I am excited to help my students reach their reading potential!
Students will be improving their reading comprehension by applying proven strategies to class middle grade short stories.  For eight weeks, I will teach students practical skills that will enhance their understanding immediately by connecting them to meaningful texts. 
 Each class will have a warm-up activity, a presentation of practical skills, and a reading application.  
Reading Strategies: questioning, analyzing text structure, visualization, summaries.

I am an Orton Gillingham certified instructor with an MA in Special Education.  I have worked with striving readers in the classroom and my private practice for over 15 years.  I love that I get to help people develop a lifelong love of reading and newfound confidence in themselves.  I believe that everyone can read when they are provided with the right toolkit.  I always make sure that my students feel supported and proud of their abilities.
