Have you ever wanted to create your own superhero? Discover the world of comic book art as you learn how to tell fantastic stories through hand-drawn comics. We'll explore the who, what, when, where, and why of storytelling and make a three panel comic in this one-time class. Introduction to the class and to comics as an artform. view-- What is a comic? Trajan's column, Giotto's Arena Chapel, Webcomics, the funnies, Marvel and DC universes, the age of Superman, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dogman, Bone, shoujo and shonen manga, graphic novels. Students discuss and share their favorites. Teacher presentation: style versus substance. Compare American cartooning styles with Japanese manga or anime. List and categorize story genres. Students choose a style and a genre, then create a three panel comic with step by step action sequences. Discuss use of "mad-lib"-style story generation, with randomization of protagonist, genre, action, etc. for students who "don't have any ideas." Warning: Comic books, especially superhero comics, usually contain violent conflicts, violent images, and weapons. While I discourage my students from creating gore for gore's sake and generally consider guns to be the most boring weapon in a story, my focus in these comics classes is to help students communicate a story that makes sense, not to attempt to remove the violent element from the superhero genre. If you as a parent find violence distasteful or do not wish your child to depict violent images, please discuss this with your learner.

I hold a Bachelors in Fine Art from Virginia Tech and a Masters in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and am a former public school art teacher.
