Central NY Chess combines lecture, discussion, and hands-on (virtual) chess play in our one-hour format. Our skilled Chess Coaches spend the first 20-30 minutes of the meeting explaining the lesson while engaging the students with questions along the way to ensure they are retaining the information. After all students have a clear understanding of the lesson, the Coach will assist them in getting set up to practice what they have learned in online chess games against their classmates. There are 64 squares on a chess board, and in our series of 64 one-hour lessons we can take your child from Brand-new Beginner to Chess Champion! This is Lesson #6: Stalemate: In this lesson for beginners, the Coach will walk the students through the definition of Stalemate, and how it differs from other game-ending conditions. Using examples provided by the Coach, not only will the concept of Stalemate be understood by the end of class, but all participants should also become able to identify situations where there is an impending risk of Stalemate, and how to avoid it.

This class uses the external website ChessKid to facilitate online chess games between classmates. ChessKid is 100% committed to safety, and meets Outschool's standards for Safety and Privacy. That being said, ChessKid's policies require parental consent for users under the age of 13; by enrolling in this class, you are providing that consent. If your child does not already have a ChessKid account, we will create one for them, and can provide parental administrative access to that account at any time upon your request. We organize all of our virtual chess games on ChessKid.com; each student, during their enrollment in this class, will be provided by us a one-month Gold Membership to ChessKid (a $10 value). We believe that this is the safest and most comprehensive learning tool we can use to facilitate our in-class virtual games. Students are encouraged (but not required) to use this website for further practice outside of class also, so that if they return to take future classes with us their progress since last time can be tracked which would assist our instructors in identifying how best to coach each student on concepts that they may be struggling with. After the one-month Gold Membership ends, students who have not enrolled into one of our subsequent classes will still have limited access to ChessKid to play virtual games at their leisure, but their archived game history will eventually disappear.

Central New York Chess is a New York State registered Non Profit Organization, and an affiliate of the US Chess Federation. We are on a mission to teach critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and other life and social skills through scholastic chess instruction, to today's youth. Our classes are primarily directed at elementary & middle-school-aged children, and are organized into 8-week semesters of once-weekly 60-minute long classes (8 meetings total), each comprised of approximately 30 minutes of lecture format followed by approximately 30 minutes of organized play between the students. We've been teaching these classes locally for years, but now are excited to share them with the rest of the world thanks to Outschool!
