課堂經歷
This group is for binary transgender, nonbinary transgender, gender-expansive, nonbinary, agender, queer, gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, questioning, or any other youths who fall under the LGBTQ spectrum to socialize and share experiences. Youths will interact via live video chat. Youths in this age range often prefer to use the text chat box, and this is encouraged and respected. Discussion will be facilitated and will allow space for social discussion and opportunities to connect with similarly situated peers and seek support around particular difficulties faced by the youths. The group may also include directed teaching of skills that youths can use to self-advocate, as requested by the youths or when a need is noted by facilitator. Group flow will largely follow the lead of the youths rather than any structured curriculum. Group sessions often revolve around students volunteering to share accomplishments, photos, videos, favorite music, and the like. Some groups may include playing social games using external websites such as skribbl.io (all of which are free, do not require download or signup, and never involve play with members of the general public during our class). Please ensure your youth's device settings allow them to access a web browser and please make sure they are familiar with using it. We do play games that require reading skills at around a 3rd-grade level. If your youth does not have reading and internet skills typical of the 8-12 age range, please discuss accommodations with me in advance to avoid frustration/disappointment during group, or contact me regarding other classes I run. Groups may at times focus heavily on LGBTQ-specific topics or may focus more on other topics of interest, all dependent on the preferences of the youths. Some students choose to participate more passively, and this is always fine. As Outschool is an educational platform, these are primarily social groups, and not a therapeutic/medical service. Facilitator and peers may provide advice of a general nature regarding situations discussed in class, but the group is not a therapeutic process group and is not a substitute for individual professional services. Students who are younger, socially more timid, and/or more at the beginning of their gender/sexuality journey may prefer my younger Rainbow Club class, which is more structured and involves expressive arts. Rainbow Club does not require reading or writing or much independent internet use beyond basic Zoom features. PLEASE NOTE: I run both teen and tween groups. Content for the tween group is kept age-appropriate based on the World Health Organization standards for youth ages 5-8 and 9-12. The two groups overlap in age range, and the main difference between them is that in the tween group we discourage detailed chat about media that falls blatantly outside this range. Tweens on the older end who have a lot of experience with independent media watching and internet/social media use may be more comfortable in a teen class. (I am flexible on ages as long as this is done thoughtfully.)
學習目標
The groups have a primary aim of support and socialization.

Youth will be discussing gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. The depth and detail of discussion will be kept age-appropriate using the WHO guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education for the 5-8 and 9-12 age ranges. The facilitator will encourage appropriate boundaries and level of sharing, reminding youths to keep content appropriate to the context of a drop-in group with an adult facilitator present. Facilitator will provide appropriate support and guidance to assure all youths feel safe and respected at all times.
Youth often share or discuss music videos, films, books, video games, and other media. I ask that we keep any clips screen-shared in class roughly G-rated (some PG titles such as Inside Out would of course be fine to discuss). As different families have different preferences regarding media, youth may bring up titles that other families do not permit. My approach is to allow general discussion of any media, provided content is not massively age-inappropriate, and to remind youth that different families have different norms and to follow their own family's rules regarding media.
Per Outschool class content policy: "Outschool welcomes classes that shine a light on injustices against marginalized groups. We firmly believe this content is appropriate for all ages when addressed in ways that align with expert opinions. Learning for Justice and the Center for Racial Justice in Education are great sources to start with." Our clubs inevitably discuss the marginalization of LGBTQ folks that occurs through official laws and policies as well as that which is promoted informally through societal messages. The aim in our courses is to align with expert opinion regarding discussion of laws and policies that cause harm to LGBTQ folks (as well as POC, disabled folks, and others with whom our identities overlap). While it is important to avoid painting any particular individual, political party, or faith group as "all good" or "all bad," we will speak honestly and critically regarding policies and laws that cause harm.
While the facilitator is trained as a clinician, the group is social, supportive, and educational in nature, not therapeutic. In the event that a youth's comments or behavior in class suggest that the youth is in need of more focused professional support, the facilitator's policy is to contact the youth's caregiver outlining concerns. Per Outschool policy, caregivers may listen to groups off-camera but may not be visible or audible during groups for the privacy and safety of other students. Students should always be aware that caregivers or other individuals may be listening to the group. Caregivers who have concerns about their student are encouraged to contact the facilitator, who is happy to exchange general feedback and suggestions. The facilitator will respect students' privacy and will not discuss other students beyond brief mentions, nor share details of group content beyond basic themes. Only comments or behavior of a highly concerning nature will be specifically shared with caregivers. The group is recorded and archived by Outschool for safety and accountability, but recordings of this particular group are not shared with students or families in order to respect sharing of a sensitive nature that occurs.
供應清單
We typically will not need any supplies. Sometimes we may do simple art or journaling, so those who prefer to use pen/paper rather than digital media may want these available. Sometime we play social games using external websites such as skribbl.io (all of which are free, do not require download or signup, and never involve play with members of the general public during our class). Please ensure your youth's device settings allow them to access a web browser. It is of course fine if members choose not to join games, but this is just a heads up to avoid disappointment.
