Students will learn about the life and career of 10 major classical music composers (Palestrina, J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Wagner, Debussy, Stravinsky, Cage), general musical/stylistic characteristics of the era in which each composer lived, and specific examples of how these general musical/stylistic characteristics can be seen in works by each composer. 

I have a passion for music listening, music theory (how music is put together!), and music history (how music has evolved over time). I have both my Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Music Education, and have a majority of music teaching experience with elementary and middle school students. I strongly believe that an understanding of music's content (the actual "stuff" of music), music's affect (how music makes you feel), and music's context (social, cultural, and historical context) all lead to greater understanding and appreciation.

I highly recommend that students listen to my "Suggested Listening Examples" for each composer throughout the week, as well as review any class notes they take in class meetings. This will help students apply the ideas and concepts that we go over during the week.

YouTube videos will serve as the main source for audio/listening examples of classical music.
I have created the instructional materials for the class, based around classic texts in the musicology field, including (but not limited to): Source Readings in Music History (Oliver Strunk), A History of Music in Western Culture (Mark Evan Bonds), A History of Western Music (Grout et. al), Oxford History of Western Music (Richard Taruskin), etc.
