Topics covered will be all disciplines included in Civil Engineering. Each week a different discipline will be introduced. We will discuss what that person does, some problems they may need to solve, and even what math/science they may use to solve those problems. Pictures, slides, and videos will be used. A project or experiment will be assigned, to be submitted with a brief summary of what the student learned in the project. These will be discussed in the class as well. Materials are included in the supply list for each week. Week 1: Introduction to Civil Engineering Week 2: Environmental Engineers Oil spill cleanup experiment Week 3: Water Resources Engineers permeability/runoff experiment Week 4: Geotechnical Engineers (soil engineers) Soil Core Sample experiment Week 5: Transportation Engineers circular motion experiment Week 6: Structural Engineers Bridge Truss project Week 7: Construction Engineers Experiment/Project: write down the process and order of building (This can be demonstrated with toys or household items) Week 8: How do they all work together?

Students will gain an understanding of the careers in Civil Engineering. They will learn example jobs within those careers as well as problems those professionals solve They will know the importance of math and science classes (ELA too) that will be needed to pursue this profession.

Week 2: 2 tin pans, vegetable oil, dawn dish soap, medicine dropper, spoon, paper towels, cotton balls. Week 3:Water, measuring tape (or something to measure with) Week 4: play doh (different colors), kinetic sand, plastic cup, straw, straw cleaner. Can also use real sand and soil Week 5: lazy susan, can use a book, box or piece or paper, anything that can be spun. Small object such as a bead, pen cap, etc., cardboard Week 6: craft sticks, glue (hot glue or craft glue), zip ties, caribener and fabric (to hang weight), hanging scale. Options for adding weight (if you don't have a hanging scale): pennies or other coins, plate weights
