Learn the board set-up, the piece names and movements, and the grid system. I will clearly and enthusiastically demonstrate each piece individually on the board. Asking for understanding from students as I go. I use universal analogies and humor to aid in retention. I will question learners about the information they just learned without it feeling like a quiz! Then go over any areas that were not thoroughly understood. Learners can be complete novices or just refreshing previous understanding. A chessboard is not necessary (yet).

Students will know how to set up the board.
They will know what each piece does and its' name.
Students will be prepared to begin to play the game.
They will also understand how the grid system is used.
