Note: If your child has not taken the first chess camp, here are some questions to ask to find out if this is the right camp for them: Do they know specialty moves (pawn promotion, en passant, and castling)? If yes, this is the right camp. If not, please sign up for chess camp prior to this one. Thank you. Chess Camp Part Two In this four-day camp learners will dig deeper into the principles of the first chess camp. The first day will we will explore checkmating strategies. The second day we will take a closer look at check, checkmate, and stalemate. The third day will cover popular chess openings. The fourth day will delve into defenses for black. For class structure I share my screen with students for the lesson. First we take a look at the lesson on my shared screen, second we practice on our own boards, third we practice as a whole class on my demo board. For the shared-screen-lesson I interact and ask them questions throughout this time. We then put into practice what we learned. On my share screen I have slides that show each step-by-step lesson followed by a slide that lists the order in which students will have a turn to demonstrate. For some lessons they may want to physically move the pieces on their chess board, such as day one, day two, and day three when we learn openings for white’s and defenses for black’s. It is useful for them to physically move each piece along with me on my demo board as this wires their brain to remember where they placed the pieces on their board for when they use these opening fundamentals in a real game. As such, my classes are geared towards learners bringing their chess boards to class each class. For the final day when we play chess on my chess board some learners enjoy playing along on their own boards. Since we had four lessons leading up to this day I do not necessarily have a problem with this. The only problem I have had is if they forget to move a piece of the opponent or teammate and their board doesn’t match my board. This can be a tricky situation to navigate, especially if they want us all to wait for them to catch up as it takes time away from playing… I would say that if they have followed along well on their chess boards and their boards have numbers and letters it shouldn’t be too big of a deal, but if they forget to move a piece of the opponent then it is maybe just time to play on my board since we do not want to lose much time for this matter. If they don’t move every single piece for every move then they may be looking at their board and make a move that doesn’t go as planned because they were playing on their board instead of mine. At the end, my board is the board that they should be following. If their board does not match mine it is because they mistakenly did not move a piece that should have been moved. I appreciate all types of learners and understand why one would want to play along on their board for the tactical element at play. If they fall behind in moving the pieces I just ask that they abort their boards at that point and play on mine. Not a big deal. Other learners may not want to use a board at all… this class is geared towards learners having their own boards handy, but it is doable if they don’t. Day 1: Checkmate Strategies Review the four basic mates in chess and see how pieces work together to win by checkmate. Learning objective: chess players will learn how two pieces work together for mate. Day 2: Check, checkmate, and stalemate Review the fundamentals of check, checkmate and stalemate Learning objective: chess players will be able to identify check, checkmate, and stalemate Day 3: Popular chess openings Review popular chess openings and successful development of pieces in the opening stages of the game. Learning objective: chess players will gain a greater understanding of opening principles and learn the names of a few famous chess openings. Day 4: Defenses for black Review strong defenses for black. White’s goes first which means that black’s is a half-step behind, with strong moves black’s can equalize or gain an advantage. We will take a look at some ways black can defend against white’s attacks. Learning objective: chess players will learn how to defend against white’s attacks *Note: If I have not scheduled a class at a time that works for you, please feel free to click on alternative times to request a time/day that fits your schedule, or email me directly and I would be more than happy to set up a class for you. I look forward to having your learner in my class. Thank you. Dear Parents and Learners,
Note: I will not cancel a class if there are less than three students enrolled, every student is important to me, one-on-one lessons are fine with me as long as they are fine with you.
Welcome! Thank you for your interest in my class. My classes are pedagogically designed to support students in a fun and engaging way while at the same time building fundamental academic skills. I am offering conversation and debate classes to get to know students and have them get to know me. I will also offer long-term writing and poetry classes that build on students’ and parents’ individual goals and learning needs. I also teach chess. I aim to make the learning process exciting for everyone. My interactive classes are designed to build the confidence needed to succeed in school and beyond. I motivate students by encouraging peer support and creating a welcoming classroom that honors the mutual respect of all people.
I am an educator with seven years of teaching experience. I teach the things I am passionate about. As an ardent writer, avid reader, great storyteller and conversationalist, I have a strong academic background in English. From middle school to Riverside Polytechnic High, where I attended high school, I was always in Honors/AP English. I have a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences in English from San Diego State University. I gained eagle-eye editing skills while editing masters’ theses for graduate students. Studying abroad in Costa Rica and Spain and traveling throughout Europe gave me the opportunity to not only appreciate, but also take part in, the cultures of other communities. Taking Gay and Lesbian Literature, Jewish-American Literature, and Women’s Studies at San Diego State University expanded my knowledge and historical understanding of those groups. Teaching English abroad in both Hong Kong and Japan also broadened my sensitivity to other cultures and gave me a better understanding of them. These humbling affairs prepared me to engage diversified learners of all ages with confidence.
People always say find your “why”, dig deep, what drives you to get up everyday. For me, that was getting up at 4:30am to walk/jog a mile, and then proceed to take an hour-long journey by bus to start the school day (prior to Covid). So, what drives me to be the teacher I am today? “Be the kind of person you needed when you were younger”. This quote translates into who I am and what I do because I show up 100% for the kids. I believe that being fully present makes a huge difference and I have seen firsthand how much further students go when I listen and truly care about what they have to say. Sometimes the little things are not so little, and create the biggest impact. I am willing to go the extra mile. I have a passion for education and teaching, coupled with an unparalleled dedication to student success and creating lifelong learners. I taught at private, public, charter, international and foreign schools so I have an extensive outlook on education and educational systems. I know what it takes to be an exceptional teacher. Thank you again for your interest in my class, if you have any questions please feel free to message me. I am looking forward to meeting you soon!
Sincerely,
Miss Halldorson
