This is a 14 week flexible schedule course. The learning format will be videos (recordings of me, the teacher, hosted on Youtube, but my own teaching.) The assignment may need you to print pages with a printer. After completing the assignment, you will upload your writing to the classroom for grading and classroom interaction among peers. Some of the assignments will require you to interact with your classmates/teacher in order to fully complete the assignment. Students should type their assignments into google documents for easy editing and sharing. Each week will have a full lesson to watch that introduces each concept. After watching the lesson, you will have an assignment to complete. The projects for each week are listed below. The dates for each would vary based on when the class begins, but you have one full week Sun-Sat to complete the project before I expect to see your project posted in the classroom for grading and peer interaction. I expect you to comment on others' projects and give positive feedback to each other, as well as see any personal feedback I have left for you. Week 1: Writing Effective Paragraphs - Students will learn to use graphic organizers and will draft a paragraph and edit/revise. Students will share their paragraph in the classroom with their peers for peer editing. Week 2: Writing to Prompts - Students will learn to fully answer a prompt, and use a prompt to write a paragraph. Standardized writing tests will be briefly mentioned with an example of a previous prompt from a fifth grade writing exam, for those that may benefit. Students will be encouraged to suggest what may come next in their peers stories and collaborate to write the next part together. Week 3: Summarizing - students will learn tricks for summarizing and summarize a picture book of their choice. Students will share if they have ever read the books their peers wrote about before and will be encouraged to share their book and summary. Week 4: First Person Narrative - Students will write from a first person point of view and share in the classroom for peer review Week 5: Third Person Narrative - Students will write a third person point of view and share in the classroom for peer review Week 6: Persuasive Writing - Students will design a theme park ride and write a persuasive advertisement for their ride. Students will vote on which ride sounds like the most exciting and which had the most persuasive advertisement. Week 7: Cause and Effect - Students will look at cause and effect in stories, and write their own from a list of story starters. Week 8: Into the Future - Students will write a story about what the future may look like, using point of view and imagery. Students are encouraged to draw one of their peers visions of the future and see if the imagery matches what the writer envisioned. Week 9: Recipes - Students will learn how recipes are written, the common abbreviations used, and then attempt to write their own recipe. As a bonus, they can attempt to cook their own recipe too and see how it turns out. Week 10: Writing About Art - Students will examine artwork from famous artists and then create their own piece and write about it. Students will politely write about their peers' work. Week 11: Fun with Puns - Students will learn about and write their own puns. Let's be silly together! Week 12: Ridiculous Ever After - Students will write their own fairytale, with a twist. Students will share in the classroom for peer editing. Week 13: Formal Letters - You've probably already learned how to write a friendly letter; now we will cover formal letters. Students will be encouraged to write back to a peer letter. Week 14: Literary Device Free Write - After you have learned all the literary devices, it's time to apply your knowledge to a free write on the school appropriate topic of your choice.
學習目標
Students will improve writing skills, and learn more about paragraph writing, story structure, and ways writing is applied to every day life.

I am Ms. Kristin (she/her), and I am so excited to be a part of the Outschool community! I have a B.S. in Elementary Education from Oklahoma State University, and hold a current teaching certificate in Oklahoma. I have a total of 20 years of teaching experience in PreK-5th grades. I choose to homeschool my own kids (three boys - 2nd, 6th, and 9th graders.) I am currently both the coordinator and an elementary school teacher for the elementary program at our local secular homeschool academy. I love to sew and read when I have free time! My guilty pleasure is binge watching corny TV shows.
I hope to offer a range of fun and exciting courses on Outschool geared toward the PreK-4th grade age range. My favorite subjects to teach are writing, reading, science, and crafts. I can't wait to meet your families and include you in my world of learning!
