Students will create a notebook and add 5 words that we learn each week. We will work together to learn the meaning of the words in class, and make quadrant charts for each word, which will help students learn and internalize the meaning of each word. We will also engage in friendly competition games using Quizlet Live during class. The students will also be able to use Quizlet to study the words throughout the week. I will also provide a copy of the presentation that we completed in class each week.

The Academic Vocabulary Word List is a list of commonly used words in an academic context, such as written texts that students will encounter in school, across the different domains (science, history, current events, etc). They tend to have multiple meanings and are not commonly used in daily speech. This is a perfect class for a higher level ESL student, but is also appropriate for students who struggle with reading school texts (around the 4th-5th grade level). When students have a larger Academic Vocabulary, they are able to increase their reading speed and comprehension. (This class is probably not a good fit for an avid reader.)

This is an ongoing class, so students can join at any time or miss when necessary.
