Bucket drumming is for everyone! You don't need any experience to learn to play rhythm patterns on a bucket. You will just need a bucket and some sticks that are the same size and thickness. Rhythm sticks, drum sticks, or even round-handled kitchen utensils will work for you here. This is a learner-directed class. Students will learn to look, listen, and play short rhythm patterns. Students will be introduced to reading rhythms by looking at musical notation. At the end of each isolated rhythm practice, we will apply rhythms and play along with a real song. We will play as many songs as possible in each class.
I am a certified music teacher. I am certified to teach all grades. I have years of experience teaching music and literacy for all grades, P-12. I have taught instrumental lessons since 1991. Specifically, I have taught bucket drumming since 2017, and have taught it online since early 2020 on Outschool. My teaching style is informal, friendly, and hands-on. A bucket to hit and sticks to play with are required. Please have a bucket and not a pot or pan. You will thank me later! :)

There is no sensitive or mature content in this class. Younger learners may need some help with Zoom features such as using the microphone and camera, remote control, and writing tools. It would be great for parents to enable original sound in Zoom and to change the background suppression setting from auto to low or medium. This tells Zoom not to turn down the sound when it hears music. Please contact me for help with these settings. I do use the screenshare feature in our classes. I show the Google Slides that contain our curriculum, find play along videos on YouTube to give students more choices, and occasionally look for examples to help learners when needed. I share the links to any videos not included in the class slides via classroom posts. That way, families can view these videos again directly in our Outschool classroom after the class. Please read the sources section to learn more about how 3rd-party tools are used in this class. Thanks!
Slides: The learner will learn where to access the class slides in our Outschool classroom. They can access the Outschool classroom and pull up the slides to practice. The play-along videos they need for practice will be embedded in the class slides. Everything they need is provided in the class slides. Learners also have the option to watch their previous classes or a missed class and play along with the class. Printing is not an option provided, but parents who can devise a way to print slides are welcome to do so. Sources: Freepik, various free websites for the musical notation images, teacher expertise/knowledge, and at least one bucket drumming video from YouTube per class are used as sources. The YouTube videos are created by elementary school music teachers. Class slides cite all of the sources on that slide. The main sources are Elementary Groove Tracks and Freepik, which are used by paid subscription.
