Over the course of eight weeks, students will learn about the activism, style and social programming of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense.

Founded in 1966 by two young, Black college students (Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton), the Black Panther Party (for Self-Defense) has since gone down in history as a militant, Black extremist organization with a knack for violence and chaos. However, this inaccurate portrayal and stigmatization is actually the result of racist propaganda and unfairly recounts the actions and activism of the Black Panthers. The party was dedicated to community uplift, safety, and transnational solidarity and remained focused on the progression of equitable and fair living for Black people in America and abroad. Over the next 8 weeks, we'll explore various aspects of the Black Panther Party including its key players, how members used style to represent their politics, and what eventually led to their "downfall".
