Class Content: The student will learn... • the difference between "tonguing" and "slurring" the notes; • the two different ways to "tongue" notes and two-ways to "slur" notes; • the three different ways to end notes; • an easy way to develop range and assist clarity of articulation in all ranges; • the hints unmarked music gives to know which articulation to choose. Class Structure: Each class session includes... • the of previous and rehearsal of previous lesson's content; • an instructional time with teacher demonstration of the next set of skills; • call and response teacher-student practice of the new skills; • the teacher-guided rehearsal of skills; • the followed by individual student examples to verify the application of the lesson • clarification of what was learned; • a practice assignment is given to reinforce the skill. An occasional video clip may be used to accentuate the skill being discussed for the day. Prerequisites: The student to have completed two years of instruction and be able to play at least a 1 1/2 octave range (Low A to Upper E for high brass; Low G to Upper D for low brass).

The student will develop the skill of articulating notes cleanly per the unique challenges on the trombone, learning the difference between a variety of articulations and their appropriate uses for various music markings and styles of music.

Students will be expected to watch two short music videos on YouTube.com after each class session. A list is provided the first day of class. Students have the flexibility to choose from the list of over 30 videos. The videos have been prescreened to assure there is no inappropriate content.

1. An instrument in good working order and a clean mouthpiece. Valve-Brass: valves, tuning crook and pull slides must all move freely. Trombones: slide and tuning crook music move freely. (The student will be asked to describe the slide condition prior to the first day of class.) 2. Slide lubrication & rag: Valve brass: valve oil. Trombones: slide oil or slide cream with water spray bottle. The rag is for cleaning the outside of and bottom of the valve casing after oiling, or the inner slide for trombones. (This can be an old washcloth, cotton sock, or piece of a t-shirt) 3. A washcloth (specifically dedicated to catching moisture being drained from the "spit valve" (different from the rag). 4. An eager willingness to learn. 5. Access to print PDFs sent by the teacher.

The teacher will provide all written and digital instruction resources.
A list of pre-screened videos on YouTube is provided for students to watch on their own time. A few of these videos will be used as introductory material to the class sessions. These pre-screened YouTube videos highlight great brass players who demonstrate the characteristics of good performance practices. Students are encouraged to watch two videos between each session, one classical and one jazz artist.
