In this five-week class, learners will participate in meaningful discussions as we read J. R. Tolkien's adventure. Book clubs are an excellent way to engage reluctant readers or help enthusiastic readers dig a little deeper. 5 lessons//5 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Book 1 Chapters 1-3Discussion and activities will focus on author and setting. What do we learn about Middle Earth?Week 2Lesson 2Book 1 Chapters 4-9Focus on character contrast and development. Compare Frodo with Bilbo in The Hobbit. What similarities/differences are there in their adventures?Week 3Lesson 3Book 1 Chapter 10- book 2 chapter 2Focus on how appearances are often misleading: Strider and Frodo are both more than they appear.Week 4Lesson 4Book 2 chapters 3-5Focus on plot and predictions. After discussing this section, we will predict what we think will happen next.Week 5Lesson 5Book 2 chapters 6-10Focus on themes developed through the story: adventure, friendship, and bravery.
- Students will sharpen their literacy skills and foster their love of reading! We will discuss and deepen student understanding of literary elements such as plot, character development, and theme.
