Stevenson's popular gothic classic dramatises the sense of divided personality that we all experience at times, as we struggle to take the right path through life. This novel therefore provides an excellent basis for discussion of topics that are relevant to us all. In order to do the reading homework, students can access the text of the novel for free online. Other than that, students simply need paper and pen or pencil.

There are two violent scenes in the novel, which some younger readers may find disturbing. The first is when Edward Hyde tramples on a young girl in Chapter One. The second is when Edward Hyde murders Sir Danvers Carew in Chapter Four. Any other violence is only referred to rather than described.
