課堂經歷

Courses in this series are a great way to introduce students to American history featuring African Americans through storytelling, learning vocabulary words, and recall. Bold Women in Black History Series will provide a strong foundation for long-term African American history studies.

Through this interactive class, students will learn and discuss the following:

-Understand the terminology of Negro and Colored as it relates to American history
-Zora Neale Hurston
-The impact Jim Crow had on African Americans in history
-The Great Northern Migration
- the Importance of understanding Zora Neale Hurston's documentation of folkloric work
-Why the Harlem Renaissance is a significant part of African American history and American history
-Great works by Zora Neale Hurston

Students will engage in thought-provoking dialog with guided questions. I will read a story about Zora Neale Hurston and students will watch a short video clip of the Harlem Renaissance. Lastly, students will participate in a fun review session to assess what they have learned.

No prior knowledge of African American history is necessary, only a passion for learning.

父母的引導和規範
Please note, this class may include classroom discussions and videos that may be upsetting to some children if they are not aware of the history of the United States and its treatment of African American people throughout its history. Bold Women in Black History Series includes, but is not limited to: poems, songs, video clips of performances, Civil Rights protests and historical pictures. I will thoughtfully guide students. Video cameras turned on and the presence of the student are required for the entire class. I require this because learners participate in a variety of ways, verbal and non-verbal. As the material can be sensitive, for some learners, requiring students to have their cameras on helps me to gauge how learners are absorbing the information being shared. If I notice a discomfort for example, during the class, I am able to check in with learners if necessary after class, to assist with any processing of difficult information.

My mother helped me develop a strong foundation in African American history through books, magazines, movies, documentaries, and more, as my K-12 education provided a limited perspective of African American history. The desire and passion for learning more about who I was lead to my pursuit of an academic and professional career in diversity, equity, and inclusion with a focus on "race," culture, and the narrative of African-Americans. My commitment to anti-racism/ anti-oppression work is part of my life's work and contributes to my expertise in educating in a decolonized format and helping others to appreciate cultures that differ from their own.

I want to share and inspire all children (and their parents) to learn and think critically about American history and other cultural studies from a decolonized perspective.

The following course work is related to Social Science, Anti-racism/Anti- Oppression, African American, and African Diaspora Studies I have taken:
● African-American Experience in the Arts
● Contemporary Social Problems
● History of Modern Africa
● Managerial Behavior in Cross-Cultural Setting
● Latin American Cultural Identity (focusing on Afro-Brazilians)
● Contemporary Africa
● Contemporary World Issues
● Latin American Popular Culture
● Black Psychology
● Slavery in the Antebellum South
● Social Problems in Latin American History (focused on Afro-Latinos (x))
● Politics in Africa
● African American History
● Multicultural Education
● Group Dynamics (Counseling)
● Educating to Counter Oppressions
● Queer Studies
● Interreligious Dialogue
