The purpose of this class is to introduce young students to the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. which led to the establishment of a national holiday in his honor. Lesson Activities 1. After personal introductions, the class will be led in a discussion of what they know about Martin Luther King, Jr. Their responses will be recorded by the teacher. 2. Next the teacher will discuss the lesson agenda, the lesson objectives, and the lesson activities. 3. The instruction begins with a guided reading activity that includes identifying main ideas, supporting details, and clarifying unique vocabulary and concepts. 4. After reading, the students will be provided with some comprehension questions to answer and discuss. The questions include: a. What was the main goal of Martin Luther King, Jr’s work as a Civil Rights Leader? b. What did Martin Luther King, Jr. do to accomplish his goal as a Civil Rights Leader? c. What one detail from the article do you think would be important to include in a summary of the article? d. What did Martin Luther King, Jr. believe was the best way to create change? 5. After the important points of the article have been discussed, the teacher will provide the students with a writing prompt and a guide for writing a summary of Martin Luther King, Jr’s life. The writing prompt: Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Civil Rights Leader who had a national holiday established to honor his life. Describe three beliefs of Martin Luther King, Jr., his important work as a Civil Rights Leader, and the message he delivered in his “I Have a Dream Speech.” 6. The last two days of the class will be a guided reading activity over Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. 6. The conclusion of the class will involve the students in sharing their written summaries.
