Students will be taught to understand what types of lightsabers are commercially available. Students will also be taught regarding safety gear commonly used in fencing sports. Other topics covered will include proper movement of a combatant, how to properly hold the lightsaber, how to move, defend, & attack, & counter with proper form. By learning attack and defense, the student combatant should be able, with practice, to react to & choose attacks purposefully for a more meaningful, enjoyable, and rewarding exercise by oneself or against an opponent.

Students will be taught:
in four sessions, emphasizing: 
Week 1 - Equipment & Safety- a guide to what kind of lightsabers are available, how to safely handle a lightsaber in a play-combat scenario, including what to wear (depending on intensity of play)
Week 2 - Stance & Movement - "Your first steps into a larger world" include understanding basic concepts of movement, such as advance & retreat, and keeping a proper distance from your opponent; also learning a couple ways to hold the lightsaber as a pretext for defense. 
Week 3 - Defense - The Jedi uses the Force for knowledge & defense, so we begin by learning how to block incoming saber attacks from many directions. These movements should feel like natural reflexes when the student has mastered them!
Week 4 - Attack - the student will be shown how to attack according to "Form I - Shii Cho," with swings to the shoulders, midsections, & legs. (No stabs, head attacks, or spins for this course.)
Week 5 - Counter-attacks & feints - After learning attack & defense, we take another step forward to increase the intensity and interest of the fight. Learning counter-attacks will allow a quicker chain of trading blows. Learning feints will help students to choose their movements decisively to avoid helpless swings and blind fights.

The teacher will demonstrate an exercise of Form I (Shii-Cho) with explanations, and the student will be prompted to record themselves demonstrating the taught techniques.

Lessons will be posted by the instructor weekly.  Students will be able to view them at their leisure as they are posted and then can reply and respond. 

Students need not obtain all shown safety equipment, only to understand their usefulness.
