Learn the tools of the trade for scientific dissections in this beginning dissection class! 

Using a hot dog, students will learn the tools needed to perform a dissection. Why a hot dog? A couple of reasons....first, it's easy to obtain and relatively cheap. Second, the thin casing of a hot dog closely resembles the membranes found in more difficult dissections. Cultivating good dissection technique in this class will keep the student from cutting a ligament or artery in a more advanced dissection class. 

Student will begin the class by learning the names and uses of the tools in a standard dissection kit. Then they will be led into removing the outer layer of a hot dog while watching the instructor and performing this technique during class. Don't worry...mistakes are allowed!

Students will need to purchase a dissection kit before class, as well as having a couple of hot dogs (room temperature) to practice on. Make sure you work on a paper plate, or paper towels....something to keep your area clean while working. Once finished with this class, they will be ready for more advanced dissection classes including the earthworm, clam, and crayfish.
