The best evidence of this class will be when the students begin to use on their own, the words we are studying! Students will not be graded with a letter grade. Students will grade their own work during class. Students will have their knowledge checked by an assessment weekly in their student books.評分

The students will greatly improve their vocabulary base by direct vocabulary instruction from Wordly Wise Book 5- Grade Five, part one. This twenty-week course is the teaching of the FIRST half of the grade five book. There are fifteen words in each of the twenty lessons in the book. Each two weeks will cover one lesson. The words will be explained by the teacher, using colorful and interesting slides with an example sentence. These slides help students understand the meaning of the words. A discussion of each word will be given, including the different parts of speech of each word. Practice will be provided by using five approaches: finding the meaning using whatever part of speech, using context clues to find just the right word in the sentence, applying the meaning of the word, using the correct form of the word, then reading a narrative using the fifteen words in the lesson. Each lesson includes a nonfiction narrative of high interest. My learning style is informal with lots of student interaction. We end day two of the week with an exciting Kahoot quiz! Multi-day course: Weekly class routine: One day per week Day One of each week: * Discuss each of the 15 vocabulary words using the colorful accompanying slide. * Practice saying the word together. The teacher will show a picture of the word and discuss its part of speech and usage. * Modeling the word in several sentences so students can hear the word using in context. *Enrichment provided by higher-level questioning through discussion and the comprehension questions. * Complete activities A and B in the workbook together in class * Outside of class before day two of the week, students will 1. Complete activities C and D 2. Read the weekly story and complete the comprehension questions from the passage. Day Two of the Lesson: * The correct answers for activities A and B will be given, along with a discussion of the correct answers. * The reading passage for the week will be read. The topic for the weekly stories are listed below. Students are invited to read aloud or the teacher will read the passage. * The comprehension questions will be discussed as a group activity each week. * As time permits, a Kahoot quiz will be given to check the students' understanding of the words. *Every four lessons, the students enjoy a crossword puzzle using the words from those lessons. Each week will follow the same schedule. There are 20 lessons in the book. This multi-day course will cover the FIRST half of the book and last for twenty weeks. The reading passages include the following subject matter for the twenty weeks: Week one: Friends for Life (Seeing Eye dogs) Week two: When Money Grew on Trees (Cocoa trees) Week three: The Last Dinosaurs Week four: A Difficult Journey (The Journey of the Mayflower) Week five: On Top of the World (Mount Everest) Week six: The Pen is Mightier Than the Sword (Harriet Beecher Stowe) Week seven: Birds in Tuxedos (Penguins) Week eight: The First Thanksgiving (This non-fiction passage teaches about the passangers on the Mayflower agreeing to a commpact, building shleter, surviving that first winter, and getting help from Samoset) Week nine: The Sky's the Limit (Flight) Week ten: With Moses to the Promised Land (this 1.5 page non-fiction passage tells about Harriet Tubman, how she yearned to be free, how she escaped to freedom, how she took trips to the North to help others be free, and how she worked for the North as a nurse.)

Students will learn vocabulary words vital to increased growth in their word base. The goal is to internalize these words. Students will be made more aware of the words in their world and be able to add them to their normal spoken and written vocabulary.

The two posssible parental concern non-fiction passages are the story of the First Thanksgiving and the story of Harriet Tubman. Each passage is 1.5 pages, and does not contain any material different than what I have always taught in my 33 years of public school teaching. Words studied include: bondage, donate, establish, liberate, oppose, prohibit, reluctant, yearn, and assemble, banquet, hewn, celebrate, decrease, edible, frivolous, harvest, hostile, pledge, and prosper.

As a retired teacher of 33 years, I have taught this same Wordly Wise curriculum for grades four and five in a public classroom for many years. I feel excited and comfortable to be sharing this knowledge with students.
