Ready to bug out?! Did you know arthropods and insects once lived with the dinosaurs? In this one time course we’ll compare and contrast insects to arthropods and dive deeper into what they are. We will also discuss the main characteristics that make up an insect and use our new found knowledge to identify and tell insects apart from other arthropods. At the end of this lesson your learner will be able to identify over 20 different broad insect and arthropod species! Learning will be facilitated through presentation slides and teacher led class discussions. No materials are needed for this course, though pencil, pen, and paper for note taking is always encouraged. No prior knowledge is required to take this course.
學習目標
Students will learn what an arthropod is. They will also learn what an insect is and how these two groups of organisms relate to and differ from each other. They will learn that insects are arthropods and that insect is a sub group of arthropods with specific characteristics. We will have a class led discussion over the course of several slides with insects or arthropods on them and use prior knowledge from earlier slides to deduce if it is an insect or another kind of arthropod. We will finish the class with 11 insect species identification slides where students can see pictures or clips and read about some of the most prominent species in North America. Followed by 9 slides over the major subgroups of other arthropods that are not insects.

I have 3 years of experience as a lab entomologist. Only because it did not exist as a major at my university, I hold a minor in entomology under my Bachelors degree from Iowa State University.
