Welcome to Art, War, and Conflict! In this ten week class, students will learn about the connection between art and warfare--how it is used to promote war and for responses to war. The course will cover art from all over the world and its connection to global conflicts. Through the duration of the course, students will explore various time periods and cultures through class discussions, lecture, and homework assignments. The course schedule can be found under the Syllabus tab.

Throughout the course, specific artworks, artists, and case studies will be tailored based on the instructor's expertise and available resources. The aim is to foster critical thinking, engage in meaningful discussions, and deepen our understanding of the multifaceted connections between art and war.

Introduction to Art and War
 During the first week of the course, we will provide an overview of the subject of art and war. We will discuss the objectives of the course and explore the historical context of how war has influenced and shaped art throughout history. By examining the relationship between art, war, and conflict, we will lay the foundation for our exploration of this complex and impactful intersection.

War as Subject Matter in Art
 In the second and third week, we will delve into the depiction of war as subject matter in art. We will examine how war has been represented in ancient and medieval art, exploring the visual narratives and symbolism employed by artists of those periods. Moving into the Renaissance and Baroque eras, we will analyze war paintings and discuss the glorification as well as critique of war through artistic expression.

 During this week, we will delve into the use of art as a propaganda tool during times of war. We will study examples of war propaganda posters, paintings, and other visual media, analyzing their messaging, techniques, and impact on public perception. Ethical considerations surrounding the use of art for propaganda will also be explored, prompting discussions on the power and responsibility of artists in times of conflict.

Artwork may feature blood, gore, and dark themes related to war and conflict. Further, global conflict and casualties will be discussed at length. Time will be spent discussing global genocides.

I have been teaching introductory art history courses at the undergraduate level for many years now and one of the biggest complaints I get from my own students, who are primarily college freshman and sophomores, is that they were not exposed to the arts sooner. I wanted to develop this introductory course for middle and high schoolers so that they could have a foundation for talking about the arts earlier than at the college level and be exposed to history in a new way! Further, my own research focuses on the exclusionary aspects of how art history is studied and I like to expose students to artists they may have never heard of before.
