What will be taught? The course will cover a comprehensive introduction to Animal Science, including: Animal domestication and evolution Animal anatomy and physiology Digestive systems of different animal types Animal health, welfare, and behavior Reproduction and genetics Traditional and non-traditional careers in Animal Science Future trends and ethical considerations in the field What topics will you cover? Introduction to Animal Science and domestication history Evolution and genetic changes in domesticated animals Basic animal anatomy (skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, and integumentary systems) Ruminant and monogastric digestive systems Animal health, diseases, and welfare Animal reproduction and genetics Animal behavior (instinctive vs. learned) Careers in veterinary medicine, animal nutrition, and livestock production Non-traditional careers (animal-assisted therapy, wildlife conservation, animal behavior consulting, biotechnology) Emerging technologies and ethical considerations in Animal Science How is your class structured? The class is structured as a 12-week course, with each week focusing on a specific topic or set of related topics. The course follows a logical progression from basic concepts to more advanced and specialized areas of Animal Science. How will you teach? The teaching approach will be a combination of: Lectures to introduce and explain key concepts Class discussions to encourage critical thinking and engagement Interactive components to reinforce learning Discovery material provided between classes for further exploration of topics What's your teaching style? The teaching style is interactive and engaging, balancing formal instruction with hands-on learning experiences. It aims to foster a deep understanding of Animal Science concepts while encouraging students to think critically and apply their knowledge. How much will learners get to interact with you? Learners will have multiple opportunities to interact throughout the course: Lectures: Approximately 50% of class time, with opportunities for questions and clarifications Discussions: 25-30% of class time dedicated to group discussions and debates Interactive components: 15-20% of class time for activities such as case studies, problem-solving exercises, or small group work Video clips: Short, relevant video clips may be used to illustrate specific concepts (5-10% of class time) Games or quizzes: Occasional use of educational games or quizzes to reinforce learning and assess understanding Additionally, discovery material will be provided between classes to encourage independent learning and preparation for upcoming topics. Office hours or additional Q&A sessions may be offered outside of regular class time for more one-on-one interaction.

Animal science and animal handling can be disturbing for some. As a life long animal science professional, and an agriculture teacher I am aware there are different views on animal handling. We will stick with discussing uses for animal as defined as humane by the USDA and American Veterinary Medicine Association. We will cover butchering and processing of animals, and animal breeders. Butchering will show some animal carcasses (retail cuts) but no images of an animal being killed. While we talk about breeders, we will not show any videos or images of animal reproduction.

Personally I grew up on a horse farm, and actually wanted to be a veterinarian until I went to college. While I love animals, I found I enjoy teaching students about animals as an agriculture teacher. I have taught equine science, veterinary science, small animal science, animal science, advanced animal science, biotechnology, and food science for almost 10 years now.
