This class will be an introduction to the topic of “animal law” - law that pertains to animals as well as the topic of “animal rights law” - law that pertains to the individual rights of a single animal. First we will discuss the concept of law altogether - what is it exactly? What is  “law” intended to do for us?  Since this class will be taught in the context of the USA, we will need to get clear on the difference between case law and legislation, as well as how state and federal powers intersect. Animal law and animal rights law do not necessary overlap in practice. We will use slides, lecture, and lots of discussion. I want to take it slow, with ample time for concepts to sink in. I will give a broad history of the evolution of both these areas of the law as well as provide examples of each. IF we have time, as a quick exercise the kids will create an example or two of each type of law. I want to hear your thoughts and opinions!
