"A Different Mirror" is a dramatic new retelling of our nation's history, a powerful larger narrative of the many different peoples who together compose the United States of America. In a lively account filled with the stories and voices of people previously left out of the historical canon, Ronald Takaki offers a fresh perspective - a "re-visioning" - of our nation's past. ( www.goodreads.com )
Through discussing highlights of the text during the class lectures, students will have a chance to learn past and current history about American cultural diversity. We will take a deeper look into the wars that brought people to flee to America, and the meshing of cultures that these events introduced. Students will read first hand events detailing how the different cultures, religions, and races, and genders interact with one another.
Students must be able to read the text and comprehend the basis of the topics. I will guide students to expand upon the topic. To share their opinions, questions, and to introduce new angles to what they currently know of American history.
Having grown up just outside of San Francisco, one of the most diverse cities in the nation, I had studied the history of different cultures from a young age. I have traveled across the US exploring Museums and historical locations. At Drury University I earned a degree in Communications with a focus on Cultural Diversity and Ethics. I have guided many book studies in multiethnic group sessions. I teach students to embraces and feel pride in their heritage, and a belief that they can be a positive impact in the fight for equality.

This book graphicly states the opinions, fears, and racism related to each minority group. Some of these quotes or stories shared are graphic and can evoke feelings of anger, and injustice. We will be discussing in depth the topics of: Native Americans, Jewish Americans, the Holocausts, social injustice, Asian Americans, African Americans, Mexican immigration issues, refugees from Russia, Ireland, and China, as well as the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan. There will be open discussions. Opinions will be heard and respected, and debated only when backed with factual information from a reputable source. Students are free to share media and links from verified sources to show the contrast between the stories in this book, and the lessons taught in schools or through media sources. I have been teaching English classes for many years. I have found that by engaging students through discussion they can be guided to comprehend the literature they are reading. In my classes students are free to voice their opinions and debate with one another regarding their ideas. Students can talk about the knowledge they already have on the subject compared to what they learn in this book. I use quizzes to gauged their comprehension of the text, and guide them to understand what they are reading. Living in America my entire life, but having family from Mexico on my fathers side, and Romania on my Mothers side, I have personally seen the positives and negatives to assimilating the different cultures into the American Society. As a teacher I have seen the growth of developing diversity in the education system. I can recognize the pitfalls, the historical issues related to educational discriminations, and what our nation is doing to try to integrate the beliefs and values of each culture into our lessons. The stories told through the eyes of the minorities living in America bring the struggles of racism, the economic impact, and the challenges each family face to overcome obstacles to become successful.
