I’ll be informally assessing if each student is gaining knowledge through one on one interactions; seeing if students can recall what was discussed and apply it.

課堂經歷

This is a rock, mineral, and gemstone club, where rock enthusiasts can meet and share their love of the Earth’s crust! Students can share new stones they’ve acquired, ask the group to help them identify a specimen, or just talk about why they collect and what they love about rocks and minerals. No experience necessary. Students who have been collecting for ages as well as those curious about beginning a collection are all welcome!

This course will be mostly learner-led with the teacher’s role being to facilitate conversation and add some additional knowledge and facts to the discussion. A new “rock topic,” however, will be presented by the teacher to begin each class and begin discussions.

Each class meeting will have the following basic structure:
- Introduction of teacher, any new students, as well as a review of class rules/policies
- Weekly “Rock Topic” presented by the teacher
- Floor will open for student questions on the presented Rock Topic, followed by any other questions students may have about rocks and minerals.
- Students will each be given an opportunity to show off a personal specimen or two (whatever time allows) each class as well.

| Weekly Rock Topic Schedule |

⇢ Week of (1/5): Sedimentary Rocks

⇢ Week of (1/12): Igneous Rocks

⇢ Week of (1/19): Metamorphic Rocks

⇢ Week of (1/26): Calcites

⇢ Week of (2/2): The Quartz Family

⇢ Week of (2/9): Obsidian

⇢ Week of (2/16): Mohs Hardness Scale

⇢ Week of (2/23): Garnet

The idea that such magnificent and beautiful stuff can come quite literally out of the dirt on this planet has always been so magical and mystifying to me. I hope to share some of this excitement with another generation of gemstone hunters!

As this is an on-going or club-style course, please feel free to add or leave at any time. See you in class!

其他詳情

學習需求
This class would support neurodivergent learning needs. It’s loosely structured and allows for one on one interactions.
供應清單
Learners should bring some rock, mineral, or gemstone specimens to class, along with any books, articles, facts, questions, etc on the topic they’d like to share.
外部資源
學習者無需使用標準 Outschool 工具以外的任何應用程式或網站。
來源
We will use some online sources during class to investigate our rock findings, as well as several different books on rocks and minerals, but the learners will not need anything themselves. The teacher will make the information and source available as needed during class time. Since the class is learner-led, the teacher will use whatever resources are available to expand on the information in real time. Most often used websites utilized during class time will include: usgs.gov, mineralseducationcoalition.org, mindat.org

I’ve been collecting rocks, minerals, and gemstones since I was a young girl. I’ve been a member of school clubs and informally researched & collected for about 25 years. I was also fortunate enough to benefit from the Gillespie Museum, one of the largest rock and mineral collections in the southeast, being on my campus at Stetson University. I currently operate a small business selling rock/mineral/crystal specimens.
