One of the easiest ways to improve writing and to create captivating writing pieces is to include adjectives. In a world where we get so used to hearing the same words, it's time to expand our vocabulary and be able to describe people, feelings, places, and things with some 'wow' words! In this self-paced class, we will be focusing on feelings. We all know words such as happy, sad, angry, scared, and surprised- but why stick to those words when you can be so much more descriptive? Changing up your adjective can make all the difference in both your writing and your speaking. Why say, "I feel happy about my new gift!" when you can say "I am delighted with this!" or "Thank you for my gift, I am ecstatic!" Students will have ample practice with new and exciting adjectives in this course and this will improve both speaking and writing. Each lesson we will focus on a new feeling and with each feeling, there will be a lesson and activities available The first thing we will do is introduce a feeling. We will draw a picture based on how we see that feeling and label our drawing with as many words as we know (without looking in a thesaurus or online). The next lesson will be a lesson really discussing the feeling and learning new and exciting adjectives to describe this feeling. A few guided questions will be given so students can practice using these new words in a few sentences. The third activity will be a challenge to use 3-5 of these new adjectives inside a new written sentence. This helps students not only revise the words but also take ownership of it in their own work. Students will then be given a few sentences or short stories about different characters and they will have to decide which characters are experiencing the feelings that they have learned about. They will need to find the words in the sentence or short story that give clues. Eg: Ben did not think it was fair. He clenched his teeth and frowned. Finally, students will be given a quiz at the end of each topic. The final lesson will be a week of review. All lessons can be done in your own time and personalized feedback will be given when writing has been submitted. All resources can be printed and kept by students. These will be great resources to keep and use whenever you are creating a story and discussing how a character may be feeling.

Hello, my name is Carlin King. I am a Year 1 teacher living and working in the United Kingdom. I have been a primary school teacher for more than ten years and love being part of the formative years. I have been trained in a number of different phonetic programmes including RWInc (Read, Write Inc).
My greatest passion is teaching children to read and write. As a child, I loved to write stories. I found it came naturally to me as I was a total book worm. However, as a teacher, I have seen that many children struggle with creativity, vocabulary and sentence structure when it comes to their writing. When children have both a writing model and an interest in the subject matter - that is when creative writing takes shape. Engaging and exciting themes, fun and well-written books and fascinating historical events and characters are just some of the subjects I like to use in my writing lessons. These classes will be for primary school children roughly between the ages of 5-8. Basic phonetic knowledge needs to be there as we can then sound out and build sentences together.
I am a firm believer in teaching phonics when it comes to fluent and confident reading. I have been teaching children to read throughout my teaching career and have had many experiences in different phonetic programmes. I decided to create my own phonic reading scheme, using what I know works, and make it engaging and exciting for children.
I believe teaching is about having fun and allowing children to get emersed in a subject. As a teacher, I strive to be a guide - allowing children to let their interest and curiosity drive their learning. As a child, I loved school and was privileged to go to more than one school as I spent my childhood living in different parts of Africa. I was born in Nambia and then moved to Ghana when I was nine years old. As a teenager, I attended a wonderful boarding school in South Africa. I now live in England with my husband and two gorgeous babies.
