每週 1-2 小時. In between classes students will be assigned a fun activity to create their own original futuristic story inspired by Afrofuturism. Afrofuturism connects and explores the African-American experience and black history using science-fiction and fantasy. Some popular examples of Afrofuturism include the movie Black Panther (2018), the art and music of Janelle Monaé (album The ArchAndroid), and other works by Beyonce, Rihanna, Erykah Badu and more! Art and history students alike will enjoy this immersive course on innovative Black artists. We will not only study artworks but also view digital media including video, movies and music. Class 1: What is Afrofuturism and why is it important? Using critical thinking strategies, learners will view a guided presentation of fine art, music and videos. Artists featured: Kehinde Wiley (fine art), Jean-Michel Basquiat (street art), Stephen Hamilton (African textiles), Kerry James Marshall (fine art). Music video: Erykah Badu. Learners will work on creating a diverse character and/or storyline using futuristic settings and portraying aspects of the African-American experience. To assist with this process there are printable templates that to help draft and outline your story or character between classes. Alternatively, learners can create a mixed media art project inspired by the artists being studied. Class 2: "Black to the Future" (Mark Dery): guided study and practice. We will discuss more artists including Lina Iris Viktor (fine art), Sun Ra (performance art) and famous novelist Octavia E. Butler. Discussion and analysis of themes featured in the movie Black Panther (note: we will not be viewing the movie, only still images and reviewing the plot. No spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen the film yet!). Music video: Janelle Monaé. Students are invited to share their story and/or artwork with the class. This class is inclusive of all abilities and values self-expression and growth. I welcome learners to ask questions and share ideas as we grow in knowledge together. It's a great way to inspire your learner to explore Black history and learn about new artists!

While discussing the lives and history of many of these modern artists, some facts may arise that could be troubling or disturbing to a sensitive learner. Some examples might be: details of traumatic life experiences, discussions about enslaved African peoples, cultural appropriation, racism and feminism. These details are handled in an age-appropriate manner and some are not mentioned outright in the lessons; however, other learners in class may be aware of these details and might bring them up in class, so please consider this prior to enrolling and contact me with any questions.
The movie Black Panther is not played during class but if your learner is interested in viewing it be aware that the movie is rated PG-13.

I have been teaching modern art history classes on Outschool since 2018 and host local workshops in my homeschooling community. As a professional artist and textile designer I have attended local and online professional development training seminars on cultural representation, appropriation and non-biased instruction in the art world, including some specifically on Afrofuturism, African-American art and Native American art history (Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art seminars for Educators).
