The impact of WWII, and the thirst for self rule among other factors triggered African nationalists between the 1950's and 1970's to fight and lead their countries towards independence. Collectively known as the Fathers of African Independence, they led movements and struggles to free their countries from European colonization. In this class, students will learn about the lives of the leaders whose remarkable contributions led to the decolonization of the African continent. Our focus will be on Sub-Sahara Africa. Although lessons are presented in a lecture-style format, there will be a lot of discussion. I expect students to come to class ready to engage. Please check out the syllabus for a detailed description of topics covered for each week.

I consider myself a life-long learner with a passion for researching and studying my own history (much of which was not taught in the traditional classroom). I have been teaching African history in the past two years and I absolutely enjoy doing it.
I hold BA in Sociology and Social Work and an MPhil in Sociology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University of Ghana respectively. I am currently completing a graduate degree in Education. During my high school years, I majored in Government where I gained an in-depth knowledge in African leaders and their philosophies. I have also taken graduate courses such as Political economies of African States, Social Development of Africa economies, and Symbolism in Africa and several others.
