In this lesson, the students will learn how to add and subtract using mutiple strategies. Some of those strategies are adding up using an open number line, making landmark or friendly numbers, breaking each number into place value, adjusting one number to create an easier problem and counting backwards. The class will begin with me using the whiteboard to demonstrate how to solve addition and subtraction problems using the multiple strategies. Next the students will solve problems with me using those strategies. Lastly, the students will have multiple opportunities to solve problems and participate in class discussions demonstrating those strategies.
