課堂經歷

In this class, which is a continuation of my Accelerated Beginner French (Part 1) summer camp, learners of French will continue to grow their vocabulary and study more complex sentence constructions. Like Part 1, this class will move at an accelerated pace. While there will be some review of simple vocabulary and sentence construction, it is not suitable for absolute beginners who have had no exposure to the French language.

Students will be provided with notes and vocabulary lists after each class (via a Word Document posted in the classroom), as well as some exercises for practice during the week in order to help them master their grammar. There will be some reading passages and short writing assignments in the last few classes.

Class 1:

In this first class, we'll review articles, gender, agreement, possessive adjectives, and the present tense of the common verbs studied in the Part 1 class. These verbs include "être" (to be), "avoir" (to have), "aller" (to go), "faire" (to make, to do), "vouloir" (to want), "pouvoir" (to be able to), and "aimer" (to like, to love). We'll also review days of the week and parts of the day and practice using them in sentences to indicate that an activity consistently happens on a given day of the week or at a certain time of day (e.g., "On Saturdays, I play soccer." "In the morning, I go to school."). Students will be assigned some sentences for translation as homework.

Class 2:

In this class, we'll start by reviewing the homework. Then we'll explore four different ways of forming interrogative sentences in order to ask questions. Students will learn the pronouns and interrogative adverbs "qui" (who), "que" (what), "quoi" (what), "où" (where), "quand" (when), "pourquoi" (why), "comment" (how), "combien de" (how much), and "quel/quelle" (which) and also learn to ask questions in the negative. Finally, they'll learn new prepositions that will help us create more interesting and detailed sentences. Students will be assigned a few sentences for translation as homework.

Class 3:

We'll review the homework for the week. Students will be introduced to the demonstrative adjectives "ce," "cet," and "cette," which translate to "this" (e.g., this cat). Then, they will learn how to use the pronouns "qui" (who) and "que" (that). They'll be introduced to the present tense of the verb "dire" (to say) and will practice using it with the pronoun "que." They'll also learn several conjunctions. Students will be assigned a few sentences for translation as homework.

Class 4:

After reviewing the homework from the previous week, students will learn how to form adverbs and practice using them with prepositions that express "more (than)" and "less/fewer (than)." They'll also learn the verbs "préférer" (to prefer), "aimer mieux" (to like more/better), and "aimer moins" (to like less) in the present tense, and practice writing sentences using these verbs. Students will be assigned a few sentences for translation as homework.

Class 5:

This class will begin with a review of the previous week's homework. Students will learn the verbs "partir," "sortir," and "quitter." All of these verbs mean "to leave," but they are used differently. They'll practice writing sentences using these verbs in the present tense, along with other vocabulary. They'll learn how to talk about professions. Students will be assigned a few sentences for translation as homework.

Class 6:

In Accelerated Beginner French Summer Camp Part 1, students studied the definite and indefinite articles. In this class, they'll learn a third article: the partitive article ("du/de la/de l'"). They'll practice using the partitive article after expressions of quantity. Students will be assigned a few sentences for translation as homework.

Class 7:

In this class, students will go over the homework assignments from the previous week then learn the present tense of the verbs "donner" (to give) and "recevoir" (to get, to receive). They'll learn the forms and placement of direct object pronouns and indirect object pronouns. They'll also review the demonstrative adjectives and learn the demonstrative pronouns. We'll read short writings in French for reading comprehension. Students will be given a writing assignment for homework.

Class 8:

After reading their writing assignments, students will be introduced to prepositions of time and sequence and will learn the present tense of the verbs "rentrer," "revenir," and and "retourner," all of which mean "to return" but are used differently. We'll also explore the possessive pronouns. Then, we'll spend the remainder of the class time reviewing the material from the course. Students will be assigned sentences for translation. As this is the last class in the course, an answer key will be provided. "retourner," all of which mean "to return," but are used differently. We'll also explore the possessive pronouns, indicating "mine," "yours," "his," "hers," "ours," and "theirs." Then, we'll spend the remainder of the class time reviewing the material from the course.

Students will be assigned sentences for translation. As this is the last class in the course, an answer key will be provided.

I was educated bilingually in Canada all the way through university, where I graduated with an Honours double major degree in psychology and French studies from a bilingual university (Université York). The majority of my teachers and professors were from France, so my accent is more French than French Canadian. I've taught beginner French classes at the middle school and high school levels at a large home school co-op and also to my own four children as I home educated them for eight years.
