In this class, learners will be taken through hands-on activities and lectures that will bring us around the Earth and into space. I like to teach with real-world applications in mind. The classes have been designed with national standards in mind - and they meet all the science requirements for fifth grade science. At the beginning of the series, learners will be able to choose from a bank of characters that they would like to be in the story. Each week, we will have hands-on activities, lecture, and a story-building exercise that brings it all to life. At the end of each week there is an assessment quiz to assess the overall understanding of the subject matter. Learners are also encouraged to use the classroom page to ask further questions and engage with the topics further between classes. Week 1: We Are Made of Star Stuff! Monday: - Introduction to the Building Blocks of Matter (Presentation and Discussion) Wednesday: - Combine elements to fix the ship and get out of the asteroid field (Story Building and Applying Concepts) - Build a periodic table game board Friday: - Finish building a periodic table game board - Play our periodic table game - Assessment Quiz Week 2: States of Matter Monday: - Introduction to States of Matter (Presentation and Discussion) Wednesday: - States of Water Experiment (melting glaciers, cloud in a bottle, the clear ice cube) Friday: - The team must use their knowledge of the states of matter to save a small village on the outskirts of the universe (Story Building and Applying Concepts) - Rocket Activity (gas, pressure, volume) - Assessment Quiz Week 3: Water Cycle Monday: - Modeling the Water Cycle (Presentation with Worksheet) Wednesday: - The ship's water filtration system has gone kaput (no longer working) and the team must use what is available to create a new one until they can get to Zathura's Repair Bay a few days away (Story Building and Applying Concepts) - Water Filtration Experiment Friday: - Gravity's Role in the Water Cycle (Short Presentation) - Modeling a Water Budget (Activity) - Assessment Quiz Week 4: Energy Monday: - What is Short and Longwave Radiation? (Presentation) - Modeling Incoming Solar Radiation (Activity) Wednesday: - While visiting a friend on Sirilia (a fantasy planet) the team notices something different. They investigate the problem and attempt to solve it using their knowledge of radiation budgeting (Story Building and Applying Concepts) - Calculating Sirilia's 'Energy Budget' (Activity) - A Planet's Magnetic Defense System (Mini Presentation) Friday: - Seasonal Cycle and Photosynthesis (Mini Presentation) - Photosynthesis Experiment - Assessment Quiz Week 5: Interactions of Matter Monday: - Heat as an Agent of Change (Mini Presentation) - The team goes to Rigon, a planet well known for it's beautiful waters, and take a deep dive into ocean temperatures/thermocline (Story Building and Hands-On Activity) Wednesday: - Introduction to Density (Presentation) Friday: - Liquid Rainbow (Experiment) - Potato Float (Activity) - Assessment Quiz Week 6: Molecules to Organisms Monday: - Introduction to How Living Organisms are Organized (Cellular Organization Presentation) - A beloved plant on the ship is not doing well. The team must shrink down to find out what is wrong inside the plant. (Story Building and Learning Opportunity) - Chlorophyll Experiment and Online Look at the Microscopic Level of Plants - Assessment Quiz Week 9 : Biotic Ecosystem Monday: - Diversity of Organisms (Presentation) Wednesday: - The team is sent to the planet Earth to catalog the animals and plants that live there (Story Building, Applying Concepts and Creating Concept Maps) Friday: - The team is tasked by the Earth's governments to terraform Mars. They must use Earth's biosphere connections to design a planet that is habitable. (Activity and Story Building) - Assessment Quiz Week 10: Abiotic Ecosystem Monday: - Understanding the Role of Nonliving Things (Presentation) - Dust Transport Activity (Results will be discussed on Wednesday for the second part of the activity) Wednesday: - Discuss finding from Monday's activity - The team finds minerals on Mars that look similar tot those we have on Earth. They conduct an experiment to test the new minerals. - Mineral Mystery Experiment (must sit until Friday for results) Friday: - Discuss the results of Wednesday's experiment - While terraforming Mars the team feels the ground shake. To investigate the phenomena further the team builds their own seismograph (Story Building and Activity) - Assessment Quiz Week 11: Force of Gravity Monday: - Importance of Gravity on Growth and Tissue Regeneration (Presentation) - Gravity Experiments Wednesday: - The team comes back to Earth to say goodbye, but first they must make it through the Earth's atmosphere (Story Building and Learning Opportunity) - Layers of the Atmosphere (Activity) Friday: - How Far Away is Space? (Activity) - Solar System Scroll (Short Presentation and Activity) - Assessment Quiz Week 12: Engineering for Space Monday: - They team decides to make a home on Omicron 6, but it is a hostile planet and they must design a space habitat to survive (Story Building and Design Challenge) Wednesday: - Build the Space Habitat (Hands-On Activity) Friday: - Build a Satellite (Activity) - Assessment Quiz

In this class, we will sometimes use scissors. Please use your parental judgement about whether safety scissors are needed. If a learner is prone to placing inappropriate items in their mouth I ask that an adult be present for those days we are using items such as acetone, hot water, glue, dish soap, marbles, or beads.
In this class, we will also use KAHOOT to conduct assessments. Learners will not need an account and will be given a game pin to use to access the assessment. All "digital materials" will be shared with learners through the Share Screen or Whiteboard tools in Zoom.
