課堂經歷
Using the tools of the compass, ruler, and protractor, students will learn Euclid’s theorems that are the basis of geometry and apply drawing techniques for constructing angles and regular polygons. The class is structured to meet twice a week for two weeks for a total of four days per session. I teach students how they can use these simple tools to discover the art and science of geometry. Students are given an assignment that best suits their particular needs and interests so that they can practice and hone their newfound skills. They then can share their work or discoveries with other learners as they explore the geometry of their own surroundings and nature. My teaching style is engaging, inviting, and, I like to think, fun! A typical class will consist of: 5 minutes- Introductions & preparation of materials 10 minutes- Teacher demonstrates some aspect of geometric construction (e.g. drawing a perpendicular bisector) 25 minutes- Learners practice applying what they've learned and we share ideas and raise questions. 5 minutes- The teacher wraps up the discussion with a review (after admiring student handiwork!) and gives the assignment to spark interest in the next class. Week 1: 1st Lesson- The teacher will give notes and demonstrate how to use a protractor for measuring angles. We also define the point, the line, and line segments, the ray, and angles. 2nd Lesson- Constructing and copying any angle using the compass and ruler (or straight edge). We also define the circle, the arc, equidistant, and other useful terms. 3rd Lesson- We review the previous lessons for the week, quiz, and evaluate ourselves for understanding and explore ideas and questions as they come up. Much of geometry is a discovery process and learners will have ideas that we can expand on. 4th Lesson- Constructing angle bisectors using the compass and straight edge (ruler). We also explore how the compass and straight edge can be used for perspective in art and for seeing forms in nature. 5th Lesson- Drawing regular polygons using the compass and straight edge and exploring more of Euclid's theorems as we construct parallel lines and intersecting lines. We also define the types of angles such as vertical angles, supplementary, and complementary angles. 6th Lesson- We wrap up the previous two weeks with a review, a bit of quizzing, and explore the ideas and questions that students come up with. The nicest thing about the small class format is the time everyone is allowed for individualized attention in a supportive environment! Finally, students are invited to the next section of "Compass, Ruler, and Protractor: All You Need for Geometry, (Part II)
學習目標
Students will improve their understanding of the theorems of Euclid and geometry as a basic science within mathematics. They will get practice and gain skills they can use for drawing and design in the arts or sciences.

I can refer students to video clips (Youtube) that may interest your learners and we can comment upon them in subsequent class meetings. These are optional but can really aid in extending and reviewing the subject matter.
No accounts are necessary for watching Youtube videos.

供應清單
A notebook with lined or graph paper, a pencil, an eraser, a compass, a ruler, and a protractor. I have found that a simple math kit at Target or any office/ school supply costs about $6.00.

教師專業知識和證書
I have taught math and science from middle school, through high-school college-prep, and tutored at the college level. For the 15+ years, I've taught at charter and private schools in Arizona, geometry, and trigonometry were my favorite subjects to teach. It was probably because they also related to art and music and the observation of patterns in nature, which are pastimes and hobbies of mine!
