🌟 Instruction follows the Phono-Graphix method for teaching reading and spelling which was developed with students with Dyslexia in mind. The Phono-Graphix method is very similar to Orton-Gillingham and is based on the science of reading. 🤓 Research shows that repetitive practice with new skills helps us learn information faster and retain it longer. Practice sessions should be spread out over a week or more to be most effective. That's why this class has three meetings over the course of a week to ensure that the words are not only learned but retained long-term. 🌟 This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays each week. Due to the nature of the weekly activities, it is best to start this class on a Monday. 📝 Students will be assigned a weekly spelling list of 20 words at the beginning of each week. During live classes, we will discuss patterns in the words and spelling rules as they apply. A list of 20 words will be provided, as well as 5 bonus words to meet the needs of a wide range of skill levels. 📝 Students will be expected to participate by writing the spelling words as modeled and trying different ways to study the words using colors and shapes. We will also discuss proper usage and share creative work. 📝 Students will learn to divide words into "chunks" (similar to syllables) and segment each chunk to identify all the sounds in the words. Learners will use a color and shape coding system as a study tool to focus on sounds spelled with more than one letter. 📝 Homework assignments will be given at the end of the first and second live classes. 📝 Students can expect a low-pressure spelling test during our Friday class period. Each week a new list will be assigned. 👀 Learners will need to know the sounds of all the letters of the alphabet, as well as letter combinations like: sh, th, ch, and ck. 🗓 Weekly breakdown for 2024: Week of 3/18/24: Words with Long A spelled with -ay, a_e, -aigh, and -ai like in, "crave, sway, straight, and entertain" Week of 3/25/24: Long A spellings -a, -ea, -eigh, -ei, and -ai like in, "apron, neighbor, vein, steak, aiming" Week of 4/1/24: Long E spellings -ea, -ee, -ey like in, "valley, stream, and speech" Week of 4/8/24: Long E spellings -y, -ie like in, "nieces and battery" Week of 4/15/24: Long I spellings -ie, i_e, -y, and -igh like in, "delight, divide, might, pie, rely and deny" Week of 4/22/24: Long O spellings -o, o_e, -oa, -ough, -ow like in, "obey, explode, afloat, although, and throw" Week of 4/29/24: Long U and /oo/ like in, "amuse, June, tissue, and stew" Week of 5/6/24: Silent Letters like in, "salmon, colonel, wrestle, and subtle" Week of 5/13/24: Endings with -tion, -ment, and -able like in, "portable, fiction, and apartment" Week of 5/20/24: Focus on Long Vowels in multi-syllable words 🛑 No class the week of May 27, 2024 Week of 6/3/24: Homophones Week of 6/10/24: Prefixes re-, dis-, and un-, like in "recycle, disappear, and unreal" Week of 6/17/24: Prefixes mis-, over-, pre- like in, "precaution, overgrowth, and misfortune" Week of 6/24/24: Words with endings -ly, -ful, and -less like in "honestly, wonderful, and breathless" 🛑 No class the week of July 1, 2024 Week of 7/8/24: Words ending in -er, -ier, -est, and -iest like in, "friendlier, quietest, hairiest" Week of 7/15/24: -ed and -ing endings like in, "capitalizing, excelling, and dismissed" Week of 7/22/24: Irregular plurals like in, "echoes, thieves, moose, people" Week of 7/29/24: Words with special endings like, "capture, conscious, freesia, and atrocious" Week of 8/5/24: Words with Soft C and Soft G like in, "cymbal, digital, sentence, and engine" Week of 8/12/24: Contractions 🛑 No class for the weeks of 8/19, 8/26, and 9/2 Week of 9/9/24: Words with -en or -on endings like in, "frighten, lesson, wagon, sharpen" Week of 9/16/24: Focus on long vowel sounds and special endings like in, "straight, creature, fiction, delight" Week of 9/23/24: Words with the sound /er/ spelled with -ar, -or, -our, -ear, and -urr, like in, "learned, comfort, linear, courage, and furry" ****Content repeats after this week Week of 9/30/24: Words with Long A spelled with -ay, a_e, -aigh, and -ai like in, "crave, sway, straight, and entertain" Week of 10/7/24: Long A spellings -a, -ea, -eigh, -ei, and -ai like in, "apron, neighbor, vein, steak, aiming" Week of 10/14/24: Long E spellings -ea, -ee, -ey like in, "valley, stream, and speech" Week of 10/21/24: Long E spellings -y, -ie like in, "nieces and battery" Week 10/28/24: Long I spellings -ie, i_e, -y, and -igh like in, "delight, divide, might, pie, rely and deny" Week of 11/4/24: Long O spellings -o, o_e, -oa, -ough, -ow like in, "obey, explode, afloat, although, and throw" Week of 11/18/24: Long U and /oo/ like in, "amuse, June, tissue, and stew" 🛑 No class the week of November 25, 2024 Week of 12/2/24: Silent Letters like in, "salmon, colonel, wrestle, and subtle" Week of 12/9/24: Endings with -tion, -ment, and -able like in, "portable, fiction, and apartment" 🛑 No class the weeks of December 16, December 23, December 30, 2024 and January 6, 2025 Week of 01/13/25: Focus on Long Vowels in multi-syllable words Week of 1/20/25: Homophones Week of 1/27/25: Prefixes re-, dis-, and un-, like in "recycle, disappear, and unreal" Week of 2/3/25: Prefixes mis-, over-, pre- like in, "precaution, overgrowth, and misfortune" Week of 2/10/25: Words with endings -ly, -ful, and -less like in "honestly, wonderful, and breathless" Week of 2/17/25: Words ending in -er, -ier, -est, and -iest like in, "friendlier, quietest, hairiest" Week of 2/24/25: -ed and -ing endings like in, "capitalizing, excelling, and dismissed" Week of 3/3/25: Irregular plurals like in, "echoes, thieves, moose, people" Week of 3/10/25: Words with special endings like, "capture, conscious, freesia, and atrocious" Week of 3/17/25: Words with Soft C and Soft G like in, "cymbal, digital, sentence, and engine" 🛑 No class the week of March 24, 2025 Week of 3/31/25: Contractions Week of 4/7/25: Words with -en or -on endings like in, "frighten, lesson, wagon, sharpen" Week of 4/14/25: Focus on long vowel sounds and special endings like in, "straight, creature, fiction, delight" ****Content repeats after the week of 4/14/25 💪 This class is also offered in a flex format for students who prefer not to attend live classes. I am a state-certified Elementary Teacher who has become aware of the absence of structured spelling instruction in the schools today. In my private reading tutoring practice, I have watched my students become strong and independent spellers by using my approach.
