Step back in time and discover the art of hand-sewing in this workshop designed for history buffs, aspiring sewists, and fans of historical fashion and fiction! 

In this class, you'll learn how to pattern and sew a beautiful, functional half apron in a style that could have been worn by Appalachian settlers, Pioneers of the Western American expansion, Victorians, or Edwardians. Perfect for adding a hands-on element to your history studies, or for those who love stories like Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie, and other beloved period stories from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s.

Whether you're fascinated by historical fashion, eager to learn hand-sewing techniques, or simply drawn to vintage, old-fashioned style, this workshop will teach you everything you need to know to create a period-appropriate apron from scratch.

I'll walk students through the process step by step...

Students will learn to take their own measurements, draft apron patterns to fit, cut out their fabric, and sew them together using an assortment of fine hand-sewing techniques. 

We will hand sew all the pieces, starting each step in class and finishing the steps as homework each week. 

By the end of the course, you'll have your very own apron, ready to wear as part of a historic costume (the style will be appropriate for any time period from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s) or for a touch of historic flair in your everyday wardrobe! 

Students do not *need* to have any prior sewing knowledge or skills (just some fine motor control with a needle & thread and the ability to use scissors), but this will be a class with LOTS of hand sewing, and students should be prepared to stick with it and work hard on each week's homework if they want to complete all the projects with the rest of the class. 

The project will not need a sewing machine, and students are encouraged not to "cheat" and use one to make things go faster!

This class is listed as an "Arts" course, but it will feature many elements of history and social studies in our discussion topics!
